Although we did visit the excellent museum, our primary interest was birding. We saw a white-headed woodpecker, which somehow eluded us at Lake Tahoe. The area was very birdy, including fall migrants passing through. Donner Lake is visually gorgeous, although the constant traffic noise from nearby I-80 diminishes the experience quite a bit. The water is very cold, but our daughter took a swim anyway. I just dipped my feet. They quickly became numb. Our picnic by the lake included jerky that we purchased at the museum. I do not think I could have convinced my family to come just for the museum, but there is much more to this park than that.

Positives: Excellent ski runs; well groomed slopes; plenty of terrain; modern lifts; not too crowed on weekdays/non-holidays.
Negatives: The village is somewhat sterile. Not many decent walkable bars, restaurants for après ski. Truckee is good but requires a drive. The lift lines can be chaotic, especially for a single when they do not have a staff member trying to regulate the que. Aggressive behavior is rewarded when getting on the lifts when there is no staff to control.
Compared the Heavenly, it is easier to navigate the ski runs & it is less crowded. Heavenly has better views & better eating/drinking options walkable from the base.

Donner Pass is historic on three levels and scenic at every level. As I drove up the mountain I tried to imagine how difficult it must have been for the pioneers in ox or mule-drawn wagons. The tragedy of the Donner Party does not negate the many sucessful crossings both before and after them. The second level of history concerns the transcontinental railroad that bound America together from coast to coast. The third level is Old Route 40 that makes the scenery so accessible. The Rainbow Bridge is almost as much art as it is an engineering marvel. The lookout is spectacular regardless of whether you are looking up at the rocky summit or down at the lake. For us the pass was both a destination and a doorway into the past.

A little hard to get to since part of the road was closed for long term repairs. But I made it and enjoyed the views of Donner Lake, as always. A special part of the Lincoln Highway.

Always excellent service and wonderful wine selection. Great charcuterie boards available. Don’t let the name fool you, the grapes are brought up from great grape growing regions in California.

In the summer there are lots of families, and especially young people, here to enjoy the well-organized water sports on this picture-perfect lake. A favorite place of mine.

One of the popular ski areas in the Donner Pass part of Lake Tahoe region. Lots of trails and ski lifts and it's well-managed.

A wonderful cross country experience. I’ve been skiing here for over 7 years and I still find the options for trails challenging and interesting. The staff and trainers are highly qualified and experienced. I’ve invited family and stipulated they get lessons that have kept them safe and interested in xcountry skiing. Mostly I feel safe and challenged each time I experience a new season. Buying tickets online ahead of arrival is a minor inconvenience and understandable since the practice started during COVID. I understand that those who haven’t experienced skiing here before COVID may not understand why prepurchasing of tickets became policy. If they knew the history, they would understand and accept the inconvenience since Tahoe Donner Xcountry skiing is a world class experience. Krkerwin

This is a community gem and very well maintained bike park with Green, Blue and Black trails it has something for everyone including little ones just learning to ride. Highly recommend this free community park for 2-3 hours of enjoyment. I have enjoyed the challenging trails along with with 9 and 10 year old kids.
