The Goleta Butterfly Grove is an Environmentally Sensitive Habitat Area where your can view the overwintering Monarch butterflies between mid-November and mid-February. It is adjacent to the Sperling Preserve on the Ellwood Mesa. The Ellwood Mesa is 137 acres of natural terrain with designated trails and beach access. Free parking is available at the Ellwood Mesa Parking Lot at 7701 Hollister Avenue. The walk from the parking lot to the grove is a little over a half mile and is marked with trail markers. It's a beautiful walk on a dirt path.To ensure the safety of the monarchs and enjoyment of the public, we ask that visitors please observe the following rules: -Always stay on designated trails and roads. -Stay out of the roped-off areas. -Watch your step when entering and exiting the grove, and avoid monarchs which may be “puddling” in the surrounding areas. -Do not touch or harass the butterflies. -Avoid making loud noises. -Keep dogs on a leash. No bicycles, horses or motorized vehicles in the grove. -Please take your trash out of the grove.

"We stayed one night and the room was very comfortable ...although the large comfy chair was recently lacquered and was still off gassing (so we moved it to the balcony). We appreciated that the balcony doors had screens - so we could leave them open for the delightful breeze. It's a huge property wi..."th some buildings requiring a sizable hill to climb. The staff was helpful and friendly.

"Beautiful facility, lovely rooms, great views and beach.
But the entire facility is a big place, so outside of your room you don't get this cozy feeling. It is a big hotel.
But honestly, for the money, is it a great value or a superior experience? It is just ok.
We had some spotty service exper..."iences more irritations than anything else. No coffee cups in the room, requesting them to be brought to us, being promised they would arrive 'in a few minutes', when it took well over an hour. And I had to call twice to get the room serviced, which it finally was, at 5:30 pm. Those were the minor annoyances. But when you are paying for luxury, I think everything should be perfect.
The facility was really hopping. Lots of families for Mother's Day weekend. We had brunch, which was lovely, but on the high-end.
The pool was very busy, and there was hardly a place to sit. Again, not what I'd expected.
My wife had a spa treatment, which she raved about.
So there you have it. High-end,...

"This is a nice hike, I have gone twice this month. It is not the season for butterflies, so I only saw 2. There was no water in the preserve, like the pictures show, it is very dry this month. Still, it is a beautiful hike. If you continue beyond the butterfly area and hike across the meadow you get..." to the ocean. What a beautiful view! You can either stand on the cliff and watch the ocean, or follow a trail down to an almost empty beach.
Both the hike and the ocean experience make this worth going. There is also a free parking lot with a porta potty. No other facilities are available.
