Things to do in Shimonoseki - Tourist Places in Shimonoseki
"The fish market in Shimonoseki is not as large or as famous as the one in Tsukiji (Tokyo) but it is much more tourist- friendly. It is across from Mojiko port (which is on Kyushu) and just down from the Kanmon bridge which unites Kyushu and Honshu Islands. So the setting is beautiful and the fish ..."are as fresh as it gets.
A specialty of the area is Fugu, and it is everywhere. There are fugu platters ready to go from all the vendors, and there are restaurants on the upper floor, many with a view to the action below. We had a Fugu lunch set with Fugu Sashimi, roasted Fugu Soup, rice, Miso Soup and pickled vegetables for only 12EUR - amazingly cheap, and delicious.
About 200m away is a ferry (they also take bikes) across the straits to Mojiko Port, very fast, frequent and inexpensive, this side trip is also well worth it.

"The front half of the fish market sells fresh seafood, but the back half is a wonderland of freshly prepared sushi and a myriad of other ready-to-eat yummies. Walk around and just grab a piece of whatever you want to try, find a seat somewhere and enjoy! It's high quality stuff that's a lot cheaper ..."than what you would pay at a restaurant.
