we joined a tour to angel falls via Osprey Xpeditions. this tour is an adventure! and the length of this tour means that you are not rushed through the journey unlike those one day tours. to help you decide, this tour involves staying at a 'base camp' which means you won't have an intense +12hr day. those one day tours involve flying into the national park, immediately boat ride for a few hrs. hiking for a few hrs. seeing angel falls for 30mins with the horde of other people, and then making the multi hr trip back. in this tour. bc you stay at 'base camp' all you do is hike to angel falls on the day of, and you have angel falls all to yourself before the crowd. you also get to spend more time at the various different waterfalls, swimming and walking through the waterfalls.
our tour guide was Jorge. he is a native, therefore, was very knowledgeable about the area. most importantly you'll learn alot about the native tribe culture during the trip.
note that this is a 'no frills' experience as the website mentions. you will be sleeping in the rainforest under basic shelter and in hammocks (everyone in the tour loved this). no hot water. you will be in a scenice canoe ride through winding rivers (with rapids) with those iconic table top mountains as the landscape for a total of ~6hrs (total. spread over the tour) where you WILL get wet (kinda like those log rides in Disney Land). hiking in a humid rainforest is also in the agenda, but once you reach Angel Falls, it will all be worth it. the hike is above medium (but not hard hard) for a average person like myself, but you can do it! meals are cooked and hot.
SAFETY IN VENEZUELA
TAKE ONLINE WEBSITES OR FORUM POSTS ABOUT HOW DANGEROUS VENEZUELA IS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. my personal experience is that these comments are blown out of portion and its not as bad as you read.
we were extremely skeptical about our safety in Venezuela since many government websites issue a 'do not travel' advisory, and online websites and other people's accounts also say that kidnappings, robberies, and petty crimes are common. we encountered none of this.
we arrived in Caracas airport at 1am, stayed in the airport overnight to catch our flight to Canaima National Park at 8am. no safety concerns (see my google review on Caracas Airport)
We did not stay in Caracas city, but on our tour and flight, we saw many wealthy looking people with high fashion hand bags etc. if the situation is as bad as what you read online, I wouldn't have expected these types of people to come or to be flaunting their wealth.
Ben (one of the founders of Osprey Xpeditions) can also send you a few YouTube videos of travellers accounts of travelling in Venezuela.
at canaima national park, where angel falls is, there was zero concern for our safety from crime. the locals are peaceful and welcoming. we left all our valuebales unattended and there were no reports of anything stolen.Written 8 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - mrc282World8,028 contributionsthis is the bora bora + maldives of venezuela. and supposedly cayo de agua is the #1 gem of los roques national park (which consists of many keys, a few inhabited, most not)
the easiest way to access this national park is to fly from caracas-maiquetia airport. there are 4 airlines currently operating this route: conviasa, aerocaribe, sascaair, airway lineaerea. conviasa is the cheapest, on weekdays, at 170 usd RT. the rest are in the 250-300 usd range on any day of the week. the conviasa plane is a 12 seater caravan, with 4 rows of seat at 1-2 arrangement. flight is 30 min each way.
the current price (oct 2022) for a full day boat trip to cayo de agua is 80 usd. 8 pax minimum for the boat to depart. the day trip also includes a stop at dos mosquises to see turtles, a stop to find starfishes, and a stop at cayo crasqui to visit the village.
currently, it is not possible to walk on the sandbar (or even see it) between the two islands at cayo de agua. which is what attracts most to this key. apparently there was a storm in early october that has swept most of the sand away, and therefore it will take another few months for the current on either side to reestablish this island connector.Written 12 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It cost $20 each to ride the cable That's the tourist rate. Locals pay a lot less so try to pass as local. Trip up to the top is spectacular so is worth the price. The top is a bit like a fair. Lots of food stalls & entertainment. Views very good but try to go on a nice day otherwise can be cloudy. Well worth doing
At the top you can go on a Toyota 4x4 to eat at several restaurants in converted houses in the town of Galipan it is expensive but the view, the ambiance and the place overcomes itWritten 10 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Luis AlejandroCaracas, Venezuela28 contributionsIf you like hiking this is the right place to go in Caracas. You´ll enjoy of a great walk as you leave behind the city´s noise and, when you are high enough, a great view of Venezuela´s capital. The only thing is that during weekends is very crowded, so you might like other hiking routes to explore Avila National Park.Written 4 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
