Things to do in Haemeenlinna - Tourist Places in Haemeenlinna
"The prison is next to the castle. (Buying a combination ticket for those two plus the nearby artillery museum and the history museum saves money.) The prison still has very much the appearance of when it was in use, except of course for the addition of explanatory displays. It looked like a small..."er version of Alcatraz. Many of the displays were also in English so we spent far more time there than we expected. The staff is pleasant and helpful.

"Of the many military museums we have visited in various countries, this is one of the best. And regarding artillery museums, clearly it is the best we've seen. After browsing through several floors of displays, go outside to a yard full of field pieces and related military vehicles. The interior ..."of the museum has displays and recreations of Finland's military history, equipment, training, soldiers, decorations and weapons with explanations in several languages, including English. There is a lot to take in.
The museum is the farthest of the group of buildings around the castle, perhaps a five minute walk beyond the castle. A visitor will save money by buying a combination ticket to all four attractions there. (This museum, the castle, the prison, the history museum. If we didn't have time for all four, we'd delete the history museum.) The building are all within a very nice waterside park, and are an easy and pleasant walk from the city center.

"Despite its fairly unimpressive appearance and small size this is in my mind a very interesting historical attraction. Its precise origins are unknown, but it is from the 13th or the 14th century. Originally built from stone and expanded with bricklaid structures it is the oldest brickwork castle in..." Finland. During its long history and the changing borders of Swedish Finland it has functioned as a defensive border fortress, a centre of trade and tax collecting, a military barracks and a prison. The layers in both the architecture and the history of use make it a fascinating place to visit. Highly recommended.
As an added bonus, I had excellent servie at the cafe: they whipped me up and exellent vegan sandwich. Such adaptability is rare in Finnish cafes, especially beyond the largest cities.
