In the 19th century, Bergen was Europe’s largest wooden city, and its busy, steep and densely built-up streets, squares and alleyways gave it a unique character. There are also few large towns and cities that have experienced as many major fires as Bergen has. The appearance of the city has changed on many occasions, sometimes amidst great drama at other times old houses have been replaced by new buildings and majorr redevelopments. But Bergen has also taken care of its historic past. Old Bergen is a reconstructed town with approx. 50 wooden houses from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Here you will find private homes from various periods, as well as a number of shops and workshops. Countless rooms and objects bring the city’s history over the generations to life. Old Bergen is an idyllic reminder of what Bergen used to be like, and a guided tour of the houses is a fascinating, entertaining and family friendly experience.

Close to Hakon’s Hall you will find the Rosenkrantz Tower, which is considered one of the most important renaissance monuments in Norway. Parts of the tower are from the 1270s, but it has been extended on several occasions for the purpose of fortification and as a demonstration of power to the independent-minded Hanseatic traders. If you climb up the narrow and dark flights of stairs you can climb right up on to the roof, which still provides impressive views. The tower was built in the 1560s by the governor of Bergen Castle (Bergenhus), Erik Rosenkrantz, and served as a combined residence and fortifi ed tower. Earlier structures – King Magnus the Lawmender’s keep from about 1260 and Jorgen Hansson’s defence from about 1520, were incorporated in the tower. 1.6.-31.8.: Café.

Bergen was a large, busy and rich town at the end of the 18th century. Amongst the aristocracy it was popular to build luxurious countryside retreats for entertaining, recreation and perhaps a bit of farming. Around 1800 there were as many as 70 of these retreats in the surroundings of Bergen. The finest of them all was Damsgard, which unashamedly presented its splendid, castle-like facade towards both the shipping lanes and the town. Damsgard was built in the 1770s for Minister of War Gyldenkrantz. From 1983 to 1993 major protection, conservation and restoration work was carried out. The interiors provide an outstanding example of a Bergen country retreat from the 18th and 19th centuries, and the garden has been recreated to show what it might have been like in the 1780s, with authentic ornamental plants, vegetables, herbs, bushes, trees, statues and drinking fountains. Damsgard Manor is the most important example of Rococo architecture in Norway, and is perhaps the best preserved wooden building in Europe from this period.
