Beautiful surroundings, and from the ruins of King Sverre's Castle, you have a wonderful view over the city and the fjord. The impressive main exhibition Livsbilder - Images of Life in the new public building reflects childhood, youth, adulthood and age in a the region during the past century. The Ski museum tells the story of skiing as a competitive sport and a practical means of transport. The rural section shows the development in Trondelag buidling styles from the fjord to the mountains, and how people lived in the 18th and 19th centuries in the different country areas.

Trondheim's execution ground in ancient times. Benedictine monks built a monastery on the island very early in the 11th century, probably one of the first two monastries in Scandinavia. In 1658 it was converted into a prison and fortress, later becoming a customs house. Its most famous inmate was the Danish Count Peder Griffenfeld, who spent 18 years as a prisoner there. Today The Monks' Island is a popular recreational area, with a nice beach and a restaurant.

The Royal Regalia - the Crown, Sceptre, Orb, Sword of State and Royal Standard - are symbols of royal power. The most important function of the Regalia in times past was associated with coronations. The Norwegian Regalia are still in use and thus represent the country´s form of government as a more than thousand-year-old monarchy. During this period the position and authority of the sovereign has been legitimised and sanctioned in different ways. The Norwegian Constitution of 1814 determined that any Norwegian coronations from that time onward were to take place in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. This re-established the relationship to the sacred king´s burial church. The constitutional article about the coronation was annulled in 1908.

The Church of Our Lady in Trondheim was celebrating its 800th anniversary in 2007 on the evidence that the church was mentioned for the first time in written sources dating from 1207. It was restored in 1739, but parts of the thick walls of the Church are obviously much older. The church is always open for prayers, meditation or just a place to spend time.

Rustkammeret is an army museum as well as a resistance museum, emphasizing Trondelag's military history. The museum shows military history from Viking times, through the Middle Ages and the union with Denmark and later Sweden. The resistance section of the museum takes us back into Norway's recent history, from the start of the German occupation on 9 April 1940 until peace was restored on 8 May 1945

"Well worth seeing ! A must if you are interested in classical music and musical instruments. Very good and knowledgeable guides. Beautiful surroundings. "
"This is a very good and rather cheap way to enlighten and entertain the whole family. Vitensenteret is divided to several rooms that teaches the body and its functions, electricity, physics and many other things in an interesting and very interactive way. There are several shows that you can partici..."pate in for free, but ask for tickets early since the space is limited.

"Trondheim is a likeable city especially on a sunny day and its a nice walk from the Hurtigruten terminal to the centre - about 20 minutes - the cathedral is set in a quiet part of town near the river. The spire is reminiscent of Lincoln and the rose window reminiscent of York and therefore is a trad..."itional cathedral well worth a visit. Check out the crypt which has a collection of grave/tomb stones that are up to 600 years old - sounds dull, but acually pretty interesting. You can take an English-speaking tour of the church and thats included in the entry fee which was reasonable (approx €10 i think). Around the back you have the Archbishops house and a walk around the river with some great views.
