Benedictine monks built a monastery on the island very early in the 11th century, probably one of the first two monastries in Scandinavia. In 1658 it was converted into a prison and fortress, later becoming a customs house. Its most famous inmate was the Danish Count Peder Griffenfeld, who spent 18 years as a prisoner there. Today The Monks' Island is a popular recreational area, with a nice beach and a restaurant. « less

The most important function of the Regalia in times past was associated with coronations. The Norwegian Regalia are still in use and thus represent the country´s form of government as a more than thousand-year-old monarchy. During this period the position and authority of the sovereign has been legitimised and sanctioned in different ways. The Norwegian Constitution of 1814 determined that any Norwegian coronations from that time onward were to take place in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. This re-established the relationship to the sacred king´s burial church. The constitutional article about the coronation was annulled in 1908. « less
