Through a quiet path, among vineyards and wheat fields, you reach the Crypt of Original Sin. This exceptional cave church represents one of the oldest examples of the rupestrian art of Southern Italy. Its extraordinary cycle of frescoes, made five hundred years before Giotto, illustrates scenes from the Old and New Testament. For its theological value and artistic pictorial compendium, the cave-church has been called the 'Sistine Chapel' of the rupestrian wall painting.

The "Museo Laboratorio della Civilta Contadina" (Museum-workshop of the Peasant Culture) of Matera has been realized by Mr. Donato Cascione and it’s managed by the homonym cultural association. It currently has an extension of 500 m2: in its definitive realization it will comprehend the double of the actual area and it will be completed with the workshops, where young people can learn the ancient jobs (cartapestaio, potter, basket-maker, etc.). The exhibition halls preparation has been preceded by years of targeted gathering of daily use objects and tools of various jobs that were the foundation of the economic and social life in the "Sassi" town. A fundamental criterion has inspired the setting out of the environments: the museum didn't had to be a cold exposition of objects but a reconstruction of environments as close as possible to reality, and therefore rooms alive, pleasant, with care for details, where nothing is casual, where young people can have a meaningful contact with the past. The operational phase of the preparation, has been preceded by the study of the most meaningful texts of the "peasant literature", and it has been supported by the enthusiastic consultation of elderly, that lived this history themselves and whose testimony is full of details from personal experience.

"An incredible collection of cave dwellings and later houses constructed on top of or in front of caves, along awesome cliffs and a dramatic canyon. A feel like old Jerusalem."
"Matera is a beautiful town, and the caves and dwellings built into stone are fascinating. Great town to walk around. Guides are available although we did not hire one. Alough we paid to see a furnished example of a recreated furnished dwelling, I felt this was one of the lesser values. "
"We met Pasquale (Apetour is the name of his company) the day of our arrival, and had then our first tour with him. Despite the fact that Pasquale doesn't speak English and that our Italian is not so good, we loved it and we booked him for all our visits for the next 2 days.
A 3 wheeler, open, is de..."finitely the best vehicle to visit a city like Matera.
We warmly recommend Pasquale and his 2 dogs (Rocco and Rocchina)!
