The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Bayeux is an impressive building, a mix of Romanesque in the 11th century crypt and glorious Gothic in the 13th-century nave. In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

"This attraction was recommended by some friends who had visited Normandy last year. I have to admit, it sounded like a total "snooze-fest", but it ended up being quite remarkable. The Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidery, 70 meters long, made in the 11th century. It is one of the most famous works of ..."art in the western world from medieval times.
In 1064 there was a question of who would succeed to the throne of England since the king, Edward the Confessor, was growing old, and had no children. There were three possible claimants to the throne: Harold Godwinson, his wife's brother, Edgar Atheling, Edward’s great nephew and Duke William of Normandy, second cousin of the king.
The Tapestry chronicles the story through 58 "scenes" each one painstakingly embroidered with over six hundred characters, two hundred horses, around fifty dogs, five hundred other animals, several dozen trees, about thirty buildings and forty ships. It is believed to have been created to tell the story to the mo...

"Bertrand's guided tour was the highlight of the trip to France for us. I have been interested in the European front of WWII, especially D-Day, since I was a kid, so getting to walk the beaches and roads was an incredible experience for me. Without Bertrand, I am sure I would have tried to do too m..."uch and accomplished too little. Based on a handful of questions via email prior to our trip, Bertrand created the perfect tour for me. It was a perfect blend of history lesson (from the strategic "big picture” down to the bullet marks in the fences and walls), individual soldiers' stories, and just being in a space letting the enormity of it all wash over you. He also had planned the perfect number of sites for a full day, but was very attuned to when we wanted to linger and investigate a particular spot more closely. I can see Bertrand as a university professor of history (although the world would then be down one excellent tour guide). As an aside, he made several great recommendatio...

"The Bayeux tapestry is literally unique: First, because it was made in the late 11th century, and is still in excellent condition. Second, because it is one of the major public-relations documents of the Western World. (As such, it is also great fun!)
To explain: Although scholars dispute the e..."xact reason that William the Conqueror's wife had the tapestry created, all agree that one of its major aims is to tell--in pictures, for a mostly-illiterate audience--the story of William's decision to sail to England and attack his kinsman Harold. As most sixth graders can tell you, this happened at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, and changed the course of world history.
Since William won that battle, he--in the words of Winston Churchill--got to decide how to write (or embroider, in this case) the history. It is no surprise, then, that Harold and his family and friends do not look good in the Bayeux tapestry. In scene after scene--delightfully introduced by the unsophisticated words...
