Situated 8km from Cork City, this historic castle is most famous for its stone, which has the traditional power of conferring eloquence on all who kiss it. The word Blarney was introduced into the English language by Queen Elizabeth I and is described as pleasant talk, intended to deceive without offedning. The stone is set in the wall below the battlements, and to kiss it one has to lean backwards (grasping an iron railing) from the parapet walk.

"How can you not visit Ireland without an opportunity to kiss the Blarney Stone? This is a must do on any trip to Ireland. PLEASE NOTE: If you are not part of a tour group and traveling independently, make sure you get there right when the park opens, 9 a.m. The tour buses arrive not long afterwards...." Do this to avoid long lines. We were able to walk right up to the Blarney Stone, and when we were finished and walking down, we looked back to see the line was already 10 deep and getting longer. GO EARLY! Also, cash only.

"Several people told us that it's not worth the time to visit this castle, however, the three of us really enjoyed our time walking these beautiful grounds and exploring the castle. My tip would be to visit late in the afternoon. We arrived two hours before closing during the middle of the week and..." there was hardly anyone around. We felt like we had the place to ourselves. We climbed the stairs up to the Blarney stone and although we weren't planning on kissing the stone...when in Rome! The grounds are spectacular...this was my favorite place we visited!
