"We accessed the palace by walking from Alfred's statue where we had been dropped by the park and ride. (Do use it when you visit, £2.50 for the day after 10.30am includes bus ride for driver and all passengers. There were two confusions with elderly foreign couples for the driver to explain. You onl..."y need to pay for parking for one car which includes all passengers and you must leave a ticket in the car. Use the other to obtain bus ticket and remember to keep it for your return.) We walked along the lively River Itchen enjoying the well kept gardens and envying, for a moment, the owners of the gardens on the other side of the river. It was warm, dry and sunny so the walk was a treat. Winchester is a beautiful, well kept place and not what one expects when one says City. "Small venue but quite well presented. The gift shop is lovely. Some great cards, jams and fruit wines. They make good gifts.
Staff helpful and friendly. We often come into the gift shop to buy small items for unusual gifts. Sale items are good.
Very close to centre where this is lots going on."

I am alwa..."ys a little nervous about being asked for a specific sum to visit a house of worship, but the whole situation must have become very difficult for the Church. This place must cost several million a year to maintain and the money has to be found. Congregations cannot be expected to afford it themselves so the charge for an adult to visit is presently £7.50 so be sure to make the most of it. The interior is even more impressive than the exterior and do take the time to study the architecture and see the Winchester Bible and worry about the water and be grateful to the man who donned a diving suit while he worked to shore up the place. Jane Austen is buried here as is Isaak Walton. I was special...
