- specasLithuania216 contributionsSince our accommodation was in Grande Terre, we left at 6 am only to arrive in Saint-Claude (the distance is around 100 km) at 8a.m. The parking lot “Les Bains Jaunes” in the village of Saint Claude is very small, therefore, to get a space there you need to arrive really early, before 7am, especially on weekends.
At 8.30 am on Saturday it was a disaster because so many hikers tried to park on the side of the road as close to the starting point of the hike as possible which resulted in traffic jams (some parts of the asphalt road are pretty narrow which makes it difficult to overtake) and the arrival of the police.
The parking lot “Les Bains Jaunes” is the spot where the trail to the Soufriere starts and the natural 30 degree pool is.
Climbing the Soufriere as many other attractions on the island is free of charge. However, you need to remember some things.
1 Check the weather forecast before hiking. Mind that after the rain the path will be muddy, slippery and dangerous.
2 Take enough water and some snacks.
3 Wear hiking shoes. Don't forget the hat and sun lotion!
4 Consider the level of your stamina and fitness (the path to the Soufriere is marked as "Difficult")
5 Don't forget the swimming suit / the towel
6 There is no restroom anywhere around.
In our case the day was going to be clear, no rain, around 28C. The previous days were also sunny, with no rain. We took two 1 litre bottles of water and some snacks (fruit and yogurts). We didn't need a guide since the path led just one way and you could not be lost. We started our climb at 10 am when it was hot already. I am in early 60s, with an average level of fitness, so it took us 3 hours uphill with stops along the path. There were quite a number of young families with children climbing the volcano.
What we saw on the top, was breathtaking, worth hard effort. An amazing 360 degree view, the big crater spewing smoke, many cracks and sinkholes, a strong smell of sulphur. Some sights reminded the scenes from a sci fi movie. We spent around an hour or so on the top walking around, admiring the volcano, having a rest and the lunch. The descent took 2 hours. A swim in the natural spring afterwards felt heavenly.
We were so happy to have challenged ourselves this hike to the volcano!Written 30 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Muddy and rocky trail, with a little scrambling that offers a great reward at the end. To crown the experience, on the return one can relax in the hot springs.Written 8 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Robby G CToronto, Canada78,235 contributionsThis was not easy to get to the Saut d'Eau du Matouba. The trail was small and it was muddy.
We eventually got there, after walking on boulders.
The waterfall was attractive. It seemed she had two arms.
The owner let us go to see the waterfall for free.

He died at the age of 35 years., at May 28, 1802.
he was also against slavery.
His monument is made in bronze. Very attractive!

He was very knowledgeable on all the flora and fauna as well as the history of the different eruptions and the volcano itself. If you're thinking that having a guide isn't worth the money, think again. With Kevin we could access all areas safely (gas masks provided and required). We were in a francophone group of 9 - very friendly, relaxed pace but you do need a reasonable level of fitness.Written 1 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LoanDVNParis, France31 contributionsIf you are looking for the perfect guided hike in Guadeloupe, this is it! Yoann is an amazing guide with an impressive knowledge of fauna and flora, you will learn A LOT with him. We were lucky to be a group with fit walkers so we were able to take the scientists path which was for sure challenging but so much more amazing and scenic. It was the perfect way to end the year!Written 20 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
