"There’s always something very poignant about visiting a cemetery. The names are not familiar of course but you can imagine the kind of lives they may have lived when you read the dates. The position overlooking the Atlantic Sea and below Fort San Felipe del Morro is about as gorgeous as you can get fo..."r a final resting place.
Hundreds of graves fill up this tiny (by cemetery standards) enclave of stone work marking the graves. Many are for notable citizens, elaborately carved in all shapes and sizes with some indistinguishable inscriptions due to time and weather. The surrounding wall is 40 ft high and around 15 ft wide and from the Colonial period. A red-domed chapel is the centerpiece of the cemetery and all of it can also be overlooked from the ramparts of the Fort.
Enjoy your experience!

Sitting on a promontory on the North Western point it was built to defend this Spanish enclave and harbour from pirates and other invading nations. The views to ..."the sea on one side, the grounds on the other, the Colonial Cemetery and parts of the Old Town are just stunning.
The beautiful walk to the Fort along the entryway path is surrounded by open grounds (field of fire) on both sides each disappearing into the sea.The impressive stone entry gate passes into a typical Spanish fortification, which has a dry moat, walls metres thick with an intricate system of rooms, tunnels, interesting displays, canons, a beautiful lighthouse and the signature ‘garitas’ that jut out of the rampart wall in strategic locations.
We try to visit UNESCO sites in the country we visit as they have such historical importance and many intriguing stories to impart.The...
