There are 3 million years ago, the Isthmus of Panama was closing and separating the Atlantic Ocean Pacific. Species of these two oceans have evolved separately and fauna present in the Caribbean Sea is different from the Indo-Pacific. With nearly 70 species of coral, 1200 mollusc and 600 fish recorded in coastal waters, the Caribbean region is, in terms of fauna, the area's richest and most diverse of the Atlantic. The Aquarium of Guadeloupe, which opened in 1987, devotes all of its exposure to these underwater riches. We welcome you

Brush up on your French if you want to visit this island: untouched for the most part by English-speaking tourists, it's hard to find someone who will understand English, but you will be able to enjoy the natural splendor of the island without fighting the crowds.

"This tiny town is the best part of France in the Caribbean. Everything works well, and the people are great. You can walk to everything all over the island."
"We were staying on the island for two nights, which gave us much more insight and enjoyment than just a day-trip.
In order to arrive at the Fort Napoleon before the day-trippers and to economize our time and energy, we ordered a taxi to arrive by the time the Fort opens. This was definitely a good i..."dea, as it's quite a steep hike up to the fort and it's getting hot early.
The view over the whole island is fantastic, the botanical garden on the fortifications interesting and the exhibits inside the fort worth seeing. There is a guided tour (no fixed times, beginning announced by a bell) which I highly recommend for those who understand French.
When we leisurely strolled down, we were very happy we took the taxi to get up there.

"We joined a dive group because we wanted to snorkel here. If you have your own equipment (mask/fins/snorkel), it is very inexpensive. You may also take a tour on a glass bottomed boat if you prefer not being in the water. Another option is to rent a kayak (1, 2, or 3 person) and kayak out to the ..."island and snorkel from there. Most cost effective though is to join the dive group and simply snorkel. Although the reef was beautiful, we found the snorkeling right off the beach (Plage de Malendure) to be even more spectacular. An extra added bonus to snorkeling off the beach was the entire mooring area for boats where you will find sea turtles galore. Either way, you will love all you experience!
