What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

The Malecon goes on and on in each direction. The ocean comes right up to and at times, over the Malecon's wal..."l. It's a beautiful stop, especially during a busy day.

I was in the Eastern Bloc in ..."the 1970s, and in China in the early '80s, and I was expecting the same dull ambiance I felt then. Instead, what confronted me was a bustling city, with multitudes of people all around me. What made it more unique was the feeling of time standing still in the '50s and '60s! Walking along Obispo and, especially, the side streets (Calle de Mercaderes, etc), and exploring the 5 "must see" plazas (Plaza Armas, Plaza Vieja, Plaza de la Cathedral, Plaza del Cristo, Plaza de San Francisco de Asis) was amazing. I couldn't help but imagine the years gone by, the grandeur that was Havana, trying to piece together every bit of information and insight that I had accumulated from history, books, movi...
