really beautiful. go may or june (crownded, but you can take the opportunity to see tradicional local parties at Maranhao at this period), after wet period (dec to april), so lagoons are full and days are clear (blue skies). if possible, stay at "Pousada Sao Jose" at Barreirinhas and ask Bruno, the manager, to visit Lagoa Verde, not as crownded...

the excursion is great, the sandy dunes are beautiful, but we lucked out since the lencois were empty at the end of a very dry season! would still recommend it though
The natural park was really nice. You will see lots of sand as that what is mainly was. The dunes are beautiful and the area is just so unusual with the sand and the natural pools. Pay attention though, the best time to go is June-July. We went in October and most of the pools were dry. Apparently this (2012)...

It was a pity that this year all but one of the lakes had dried up, but the desert itself sure is worth the visit. But you do need to join a tour group to visit, which isn't difficult or costly with very effective tour operators in Barreirinhas. Lencoes Maranheses was fabulous. If you go, try to go in June and July when they have the most water. There has been a drought there for the past year so I recommend waiting until you know for sure that the park will have more water. Best time to go is in August - when it is not too hot and wet season has just finished. Be prepared to do some walking over some sand dunes to find the lagoons - they do tend to dry up if the rains are scarce during the year. Finally, bring lots of water and sunscreen!
The tour on the loading area of the Toyota to the lagos through the magia and the dunes is demanding for your belly-depending of the driver. In case the climate is too hot and the lagos are not filled by water a stay of 2 max. 3 days is sufficient to get an impression of how it could look like...

Walking the sand dunes and bathing on the clear pluvial water lagoons on our own was one of the most sensational experiences of our lives. There was absolutely nobody on the park, just the two of us, the amazing nature, the sound of the breeze, mixture of sunshine and light rain. We stayed in Atins and walked the dunes from...
