Jalpapara National park is one of the best known wildlife sanctuaries in India and the most popular among the national parks in the Dooars region. It is one of the largest homes of the one-horned rhino. Additionaly, elephants, bisons, hog deer, sambar and a variety of birds including peacocks live in this park which comprises of large tracts of grasslands and patches of riverine forests. A number of small rivers and rivulets run through the park. There are two kinds of safaris here - Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari. Safaris can be booked online through the website of WBFDA. We paid Rs480/- for online booking of the afternoon jeep safari for 4 persons and Rs.4080/- for the morning elephant safari for 4 persons. Gypsys can accommodate 6 persons, while only 4 are permitted on an elephant. For the afternoon jeep safari, you need to be at the Madarihut NIC with photo identity cards in original by 10am. This office is close to the Jaldapara Tourist Lodge where we stayed. We paid an additional amount of Rs.2450/- for the gypsy safari and Rs.750/- for the elephant safari. The figures are for 4 persons. The afternoon jeep safari was very nice and we could see bisons, elephants, peacocks and a few rhinos. There was a Bodo Dance by local girls at the end of the safari. This is part of the safari and a commendable effort to provide some income to local tribal people. The elephant safari is in the morning and starts from the Hollong Tourist Lodge. This gives you a real close feel of the forest and you need to be careful about branches hanging close. It is recommended to take both the safaris as the experience is quite different for each. Do carry your photo ID cards and sufficient cash for payment at the counters.

The visit to Jaldaphara was breathteaking. Serene environment. The diversity of animals and vegetation is immense. The park offers great insight in the diversity of life in India through display of diverse species of flora and fauna in the park,

The national park is famous for one horned rhino. But beside this, it also provide an exposure to diversified species of flora & fauna within an enthralling landscape. The jungle flavour was very much felt right from the approach through adjacent busy highway, which just got intensified while entered in to the park for our stay at Hollong, where we had an unforgettable experience for next 24 hrs.

As we halted at Hollong, no Gypsy Safari was done, but next day morning we went for Elephant Safari & got the thrilling experience while passing through dense area of forest and shallow streams. We had closely viewed abundance of wildlife at their natural habitation through out the day as well as night during our stay at Tourist Lodge.

All together, this place is probably the prime attraction of Dooars & recommend for visit to have a true experience of wildlife & nature together.

This has been my second trip to Jaldapara. While most of us know about Hollong and Jaldapara tourist lodge and visit the hollong beat, there's another beat in Jaldapara which is barodabri beat, which can be visited from the wbfdc malangi lodge. Elephant safari is organized through malangi lodge and it's almost as beautiful as the experience in hollong.

We visited during November 2019 and really enjoyed our stay at Malangi and elephant safari.

For a detailed information on Malangi lodge, elephant safari timing and booking procedures plz visit my blog ramblersnaps.blogspot.

We tried the elephant safari at Jaldapara and it was a very enjoyable experience. Sitting on the elephant already makes you feel like a prince and then going deep inside the dense forest to search for Rhinos adds to its flavor. The morning jungle looks thrilling with 4 elephants standing at your disposal. The only place in West Bengal where you can have a elephant safari saya it all. A must must try for a new experience all together.
1.Get your tickets the before day from jaldapara Tourist inn.
2.There are only 3 trip and 4 elephants each carrying 4 ppl.
3.Priority is given to Ppl staying in Holong Bunglow and Jaldapara tourist inn.
4.Tickets are given from 7 pm but one can find ppl standing from 12 pm as everyone wants to try.
5.For the outside ppl Friday will be the best probability as Holong Bunglow and the park both are closed on Thursday and so one can get more tickets on Thursday for Fridays ride.
5.One person 4 tickets... Carry xerox copies of ids.
6.Try to get the first safari.

Mainly grasslands surround this forest area, but then again this is where 🦏 lives. Satisfying safari combined with a tribal dance performance in the evening made the trip worthwhile.

We stayed at the Jaldapara Tourist Lodge... The tickets for jeep and elephant safari are easier to get from there... although there is a ticket counter. Number of elephants is very limited so, if you are not staying in Hollong GH, or JTL for at least two nights, getting a ticket for elephant ride could be a struggle. We were told that one has to queue up n front of the ticket counter from 3PM and the elephant safari tickets (whatever has remained after distributing to the govt lodges) will be sold at first come first serve basis at 7PM!!! Had I got my tickets that way, I would be biting my hand, because elephant safari was sheer disappointment, except for the initial excitement of riding an elephant and going through a deep forest early in the morning. The mahouts did not take us across the stream or into water (as you see in so many pictures).. the ride was over in around 45 minutes. We were not taken into the grassland where animals (Especially rhinos) are more likely to be found. With ticket costing 2400/- for two - not worth!! Instead, the jeep safari which we cost almost the same for the entire jeep of 6 people and a guide and a driver, was much better. We saw some bisons, deer, a rhino, lot of peacocks, wild boar and a rhino from a distance. Spotting animals depends on your luck too. Also, we were later told that the first jeep in the morning usually gets to see more animals, who then get scared away by the noise of the jeeps and move away.

It was a nice experience to visit Jaldapara forest. We stayed in Jaldapara jungle camp hotel(nice one to stay). The jeep safari is good but it depends on your luck if you can see animals. But we saw deers and peacocks during the jeep safari but could not see any animals during our elephant safari (4 people can sit in an elephant).
Moreover to get booking for elephant safari is a tough one as maximum of the elephant safari bookings are reserved for Hollong bunglow and Jaldapara Tourist lodge (both are government hotels). Our luck was good that a team of 4 people cancelled their booking and we got that.
We went for sightseeing to the tea gardens and phuentsholing(bhutan border) and also visited the chilapata forest.
