This is a bit expensive (I think it was $23) but that was round-trip. You can get on at Hill City or at Keystone. Takes about 2 hours or so of your day. My relatives liked it and found it relaxing (they are senior citizens) and everyone in our family enjoyed it. I wish it was shorter but no other...

The 1880 Train in the South Dakota Black Hills (and its associated South Dakota State Railroad Museum) which travels roundtrip between HIll City and Oblivion (i.e., Keystone), South Dakoto is the real thing. The tour is the perfect length (2 hours) and you have a choice of restored open or enclosed cars for the ride. Bring a light jacket, especially...

It was just aweful. The steam whistle is relentless. And if the whistle isn't bothering you the brakes are. There really aren't any sites that you can't see just driving the hills. You go past 20 or so back yards. There really isn't any compelling narrative. At $80 for our family of four it was the most expensive thing we...

I've ridden the train twice now when relatives were visiting. It's about an hour ride each way, in a windowed or open car (I preferred the open one, more fresh air). The first time Colleen provided a charming narration of the ride. She was very friendly, and the whole staff waved merrily even though I'm sure their wrists get sore...

This is a fun steam train that goes back and forth between Keystone and Hill City. There are nice gift shops in both towns, particularly Hill City, where you can also purchase snacks, etc. We reserved our tickets online and bought them the morning of the train trip; the whole reservation/ticket purchasing process was a simple one. I was impressed...

We were really excited to take the kids on there first ever train ride of any type when we booked this ride but were disappointed! The ride itself is neat since its on a train but it doesn't really show you anything except other resorts and people's houses! We really thought it would be neat to see some of the...

This is a great way to see both keystone and hill city. The train museum at the same location however isn't all that great so go for the train not the museum
If it was not part of a package with Grayline Tours, I would pass on this. It was your typical train ride. Scenery was so-so. Young children were bored with the trip. We saw one deer. Compared with other train rides we have taken from Durango to Silverton in Colorado, the Alaskan train, and the train in Cass West Virginia...
