The musical, based on the beloved 1992 Disney movie musical of the same name, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teen aged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of real life orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The original Disney film has morphed into a cult phenomenon with a generation of avid fans discovering the movie on VHS and DVD. The stage version introduces several brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’ « less

I didn't know much about Newsies before seeing it other than it was a Disney production and that it won a Tony. We went to the theatre itself to get our tickets and were told about a lottery that happens in which you show up at 5pm and fill out a draw card and at 530 they make the draw... More

Disney did it again on Broadway. Loved the movie, Newsies, growing up and the musical on Broadway did not disappoint. Very strong singers and AMAZING dancing. Can't get the songs out of my head. A must see!

A show with lots of energy by the many new performers. Good storyline and singing, but the dancing was as good as I have ever seen in a broadway show. Should be around for a long time. Highly recommend for all ages.

Having seen the Book of Mormon I was a bit worried that I may have found newsies boring . I am happy to say it was excellent if you like a good old fashioned singing and dancing extravaganza . The tap dancing blew me away . The use of the scenery was brilliant so hats off to the designer .... More

Inspiring, fun, and enjoyable. The young, rookie cast really delivered, with enthusiasm. You could tell they were enjoying themselves. The set was amazing, and I really appreciated that the cast came out afterwards to meet the audience.

We sat in the Mezzanine, which was perfect for viewing the entire stage. The set was amazing, the singing, dancing, and acting delightful. What a wonderful musical, I highly recommend it to everyone, children, teens, and adults alike!

This show was fantastic! For anyone who grew up watching the movie, I definitely recommend seeing this. The story line is slightly different though, but still great.

Had no idea what the musical was about but now can't get enough. Newsies is High Energy. Singing and dancing is tremendous. Can't wait to get back to Broadway to see it again. Will definitely see it when it tours in my area.
