James Moreau Brown bought land on the corner of 23rd and Broadway streets in Galveston to build his future home. Brown designed Ashton Villa by studing several architectural pattern books and modified his building plans accordingly. The villa was built in 1858 and completed in 1859 with slaves and European craftsmen. It is considered to be one of the first brick structures in the state. « less

There was a walk between the house and the gift shop. There was a plexi glass covered hole, where you could look down and see the layer of debris from the 1900 storm. This 'villa' is a survivor of that storm. Well worth the tour to see the way it was and learn about the history of this majestic beauty. More

Came from Maine with my sister..was excited to see the Ashton Villa as we had read so much about it. Was told that the Historical Society of Galveston is no longer allowing public tours. Very discouraging. Unless there is structural damage to the Ashton Villa it should be enjoyed by all. This is a large piece of history being denied... More

The tour guide provided so much information about the house and about the family that lived there. Favorite stories told were about Bettie Brown and surviving the "Great Hurricane". Loved it so much that I bought a book about Ms. Brown in the gift shop located at the house. More

We had a wonderful time touring this home. The guide told wonderful stories and was very interesting. You could really tell that he loved what he was doing. I liked that we got to tour the entire house and not just 'look into the rooms.' This is a MUST SEE if you go to Gallveston. More

I really enjoyed the tour of this home. The guide was a very good storyteller and really gave you a feel for how the prior residents lived. More
