You drive up and park backwards so you can run if there is a sulfur eruption--first trip was awesome, you can really get the power of a volcano standing at the lip, and then hiking to the overlook. Second trip--closed as there was too much sulfur erupitng..... More

Went during the day. What a sight. Went to Masaya and Pueblos Blancos for the rest of the day and went back at night for the night tour. Had an excellent guide. Saw the other 3 craters, 2 bat caves....holy s---, and then the back side of the crater at dark. Ooozing lava. Holy cow. Never forget it. More

What an opportunity to look down into the crater of an active volcano. The experience was guided in English and Spanish with an enthusiastic guide, and included outdoor hiking as well as a hike into a bat cave. After dark we were taken again to the mouth of the volcano where we looked down and could see the orange glow... More

This place was really cool. We drove right up to the edge of it and you could see and smell the gases from the volcano. You could also walk up about 500 steps to a big cross and look even further down into it. I can't imagine how they got that cross up there! This place was very interesting and... More

Lace up your hiking boots and hail a taxi to the National Park, where you can get a guide to take you into a cave with bats and tell you the history of the area. Just seeing the crater near the volcano makes it worth the trip. You can hike up and around the volcano as well. Be careful--the strong... More

We took the night tour and really enjoyed it. Lots of vistas, a smokey volcano, bat caves and glowing lava. A good experience. More

This park is a repeat visit for us because we bring friends every time we have new visitors with us. We usually take a cab up to the parking lot, hike around, go up to the lookout, and stop at the museum on the way down. The museum is a must see as well. For a small museum it is... More

A huge gaping crater where you can safely see the steam escape. You drive right up to the edge of it, but you can scale steps to get a better view. This is a place where they tossed a few people to their death during the Nicaraguan civil war. More

I can highly recommend the night tour. You get to see the whole complex volcano from the highest point, then go to the bat cave and see the incandescence of the volcano after dark. No trip to Nicaragua should be without this tour. More

This was the first volcano crater that I've ever seen up close - it was spectacular! With all the gases escaping, there is no denying the activity of this volcano. To be so close to the crater was a little scary - especially since you have to park your car facing the exit in case there is an "event". That... More
