I am comparing this to Tattered Cover in Colorado, which has a much better atmosphere, but the one great thing about Powell's was that they buy and sell used books. Always nice to find a deal. Many sections and pretty kid friendly. Seemed a little dirty and seemed to attract quite the varied Portland crowd but definitely worth a visit.... More

I didn't set aside enough book browsing time for this trip. You really need to spend an entire afternoon perusing the vast selection of new and used books.

Refreshing to see that an independent book store of this size can still make it in this day and age of Kindle's, Nooks, and e-readers. The true Pearl of Portland's Pearl District. I spent 3 hours on a rainy Sunday afternoon and only my hunger got me to leave. Found a great selection of rare, out of print books to... More

My first thought was "yeah right". Now? If you like to read, go here. If you don't like to read, go here. If you know what you want, go hear. If you don't know what you want, go here. Get the point? This place is over a city block large. They have everything, in triplicate, from different countries. The entire... More

I could spend the entire week we're in Portland in Powell's! It really is amazing. Hubby even found a book to buy and he hardly ever reads. Definitely worth a stop!

Who doesn't love a good bookstore? Well this is a great one with layers upon layers of floors and rows to get lost in. Despite the absolutely gorgeous weather outside (80s and sunny!!) and a mere 24 hour stop in Portland, we were still compelled to spend some time inside Powells.

I stopped by earlier this week while visiting friends in Portland. When I entered I realized I had died and gone to book heaven! This store is HUGE and maps are provided for customers. We were on a tight schedule and could only browse for about half an hour. That was simply not enough time but it was better than... More

This bookstore seemed more like a tourist attraction than a bookstore. You could get lost in this store. An outstanding collection and wide variety. Organized by topic/theme so it was relatively easy to find what we were interested in, but the store is very large and we had to ask for directions inside.

Powell’s City Of Books” claims to be the largest independent new and used bookstore in the world (and they may very well be!). The store takes up a whole city block, and it shelves all books, used and new side by side. This is one of those funny places I’m always looking for, with the exception that this one actually... Bought a new book as a gift that I have never seen elsewhere and put a reserve on a book that is out of print since 1971. It is rare to find this kind of book store anymore. Go if you love to read and love books!
