The island of Janitzio has seen better days, that's for sure. But the whole experience is worth it if you are interested in seeing the mexican folklore. The boat trip, the mariachis, eating fish with a view over the lake, etc. You can spend the whole day, or just the morning. It's up to you, There are boats every hour... More

We took a very early ferry to the island to beat the crowds - and we were the only "gringos" onboard. The rest were locals who live on the island and we had fun chatting with them. We did the big climb to the top to see the statue of Morelo at the top of the hill. It $6peso (less... More

The barge ride out is interesting, but the island is verticle, crowded, and littered with vendors and people selling fried minnows. The height of the venture is the monument on the highest point of the island. There is nothing colonial there. I will say looking at the island from the mainland or el estribo is much more scenic. Let me put it this way. The significance of the sight I am sure is historically important. But I didnt even like the Statue(aesthetically that is.) I didn't mind the climb but I expected more than rows and rows of stores all the way to the top. There's a park at the top , the view is great.I guess the one... More

Traveling from Pátzcuaro to Isla Janitzio by boat is nice, but once you get there the island is not pretty, and please do not eat there! Just just enjoy the lake view and get back to Pátcuaro. More

Like previously mentioned, when our ferry had gotten close to the island, we were greeted by local fisherman demonstrating how they artfully used their beautifully-constructed fishing net. They could almost incorporate some form of dancing and would still be pretty to look at. The big status of Morelo was on top of the hill. So we strolled our way through... More

I traveled to Janitzio on a vacation with Mexican relatives, who were excited to share the richness of the traditions and history of the area. After visiting Morelia and Patzcuaro, I can't say that Janitzio is as rich in "culture", as the streets are lined with vendors from the moment you step off the boat. However, learning the history of... More

Someone wrote a discription of Janitzio as a place for people "hoping for a glimpse of native culture". That's like describing Disneyland in the same terms for foreign visitors. Lake Patzcuaro is surrounded by little towns like Jaracuaro, Tzintzuntzan and Santa Clara del Cobre where the local culture is rich. Janitzio is a tourist trap from the time you disembark... More
