Though one must travel down Core Creek (the Beaufort Waterfront) by boat to gain entrance, it is definitely the best view in all of Carteret County. You can often see the wild horses on Carrot Island plus you can see Cape Lookout National Seashore in the distance as well as the beautiful island of Shackleford Banks. It is also educational... I took a kayak over to the reserve (that's the best way) and walked across Carrot Island and Bird Shoals on the western end of the reserve. You'll see lots of birds, crabs, fish and even the horses that run wild. You'll also see very few people! Much less than Atlantic Beach or even Shackleford Banks. There are walking paths... More

Located on Carrot Island in Beaufort, NC the Rachel Carson Reserve is worthwhile seeing. Wild horses roam freely and are visible from the Beaufort waterfront. Access is by various types of watercraft. Programs are frequently available from the Maritime Museum. More

We rented kayaks ($8/hr bare boat for half day or more from Beaufort Inlet Watersports - Darrel was great!) and paddled over for the day. We hiked the island and found a herd of 26 grazing on the windward side. Not to be missed! More

One can rent canoes or kayaks on the Beaufort waterfront enabling one to easily explore the Reserve. An avid canoeist, I strap mine on my vehicle and bring it with me when I visit Beaufort. Suggest timing your paddle to take advantage of the tides. Catch the rising tide for an easy paddle through and around the moored sailing boats... More
