This is a wonderfully preserved and displayed, active Paleontological Dig Site, a must see in the midwest. This park has fossil remains rarely seen in both condition of fossils and unique way in which dying animal were encased in the volcanic ash of a Super Volcanic eruption from as far away as Idaho, caused by the 'hot spot' that is... Anyone with the smallest spark of interest in the prehistory of this area will be fascinated by this site. Plan on spending at least a couple of hours looking at the dig and reading what is offered. Then wander on the prairie for a while.

The Ashfall Fossil Beds is a great attraction. I loved the educational displays. And to watch the fossils being excavated was amazing. They have cameras pointed to the area they are working on and display the pictures on tvs. One of the students came around and asked if we had any questions. I have never seen anything like it.

We have visited Ashfall Fossil Beds at least five times. The new rhino barn lets us see work in progress. The fossils are left in-situ which makes all better.

Ashfall offered something for everyone in my family. My 3 year old son enjoyed digging in the sand and seeing the bones. My 9 year old daughter loved the bookshop. I enjoyed the historical descriptions, especially those of the rivers in Nebraska and the surrounding areas.

A friend recommended this stop, and I am glad we went. It is definately off the beaten path. In fact we almost got lost on the way. But WOW. Had to imagine that a volcano in Idaho could dump ash way over here in Nebraska and kill a bunch of animals. Totally worth learning about.

These fossil beds are very unique in that they are comprised of complete animal skeletons or prehistoric rhino, deer, horses, and many other animals. The ash is from an eruption west of Yellowstone and there is nothing like it anywhere else in the US. Well worth the trip to virtually noplace, Nebraska.

There is literally nothing like this in the world. As the name implies, this park preserves a site where a cloud of volcanic ash settled on a large waterhole 11.8 million years ago. Since this was a place where animals would gather, you can see dozens of skeletons (rhinoceros, deer, horses, camels, and more) preserved in the same positions as... More

I and my family just visited here and saw the changes from the first time 8 yrsago. Inside the building housed complete skeleton remains of horses, Rhino's and mammoths who were caught in the volcanic ash that came across from yellowstone park covering the entire area in ash. New discoveries have just been made with more bone that petrified to... More

I really liked that the archeologist was still digging around to uncover bones. A wonderful display!
