As soon as we pulled into the parking lot, we were greeted by a delightfully friendly retiree, who lives in Old Mission. Both he and his wife were on the grounds, and we suspect that they volunteer their time here frequently. Our young children were instantly drawn to them in a grand-parently way. They advised us that the lighthouse is... More

I’m not a lighthouse aficionado but I recently visited the Grand Traverse Lighthouse and the Mission Point Lighthouse, both located in state parks north of Traverse City. If you are not a lighthouse aficionado and can only visit one, I suggest you visit the Mission Point Lighthouse. Unlike Leelenau State Park (home of the Grand Traverse Lighthouse), you pay nothing... Although perhaps not as impressive (to some) as other lighthouses, Old Mission Point has finally opened and is worth the drive up from the Traverse City area. Visited with my wife and young boys. The light house was not much to see. The sandy area next to the lighthouse was nice and had a small swingset. Tried walking the long rocky trail to the end of the peninsula, which unfortunately was swarming with flies, and was very mucky and smelly in spots. Not recommended - especially on... More

I often visit this park. The lighthouse, sandy beach, rocky beach, woods, lakeshore...all are so beautiful. Especially I like to say that the tip which separate west and east arm of Grand Traverse Bay. We can walk through the long tip and even through water far away from the lighthouse. More

A great scenic drive if you are in the Traverse City area is to go straight up M-37 on Old Mission Peninsula until it ends. For eighteen miles, you have great views of the two bays, vineyards, and orchards where you can pick up fruit if it is in season or do wine tasting at the wineries located on the... More
