Maine Historical Society is near Monument Square. Its staff are primarily volunteers, and some do seem stuck in perpetual slow motion. Its far too small bookshop carries many hard to find titles about the history of Maine and local communities. Its museum offers permanent and temporary exhibits of decorative arts, art, artifacts, and other objects; museum entry is $8. The... More

The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining at the same time. You get admission to both the Mansion and the Museum.

I like the gift shop here. Ther are many interesting articles for sale and it is a great place to buy some of the historic Portlandia. Good books and cards. The service is terribly slow and frustrating, so don't go if you are in any kind of a hurry. The people are volunteers who run the shop and are very... More

This small museum and its lovely historic gardens are a quiet delight. Not flashy, this isn't Disneyland, but a nice respite with plenty of historic material to enjoy, things to learn, and a great bookstore/gift shop for the history-minded. For the genealogy buff, this is a place for serious study; their very-professional staff can steer the serious scholar in the... More

Located next to, and part of the Maine Historical Society (MHS) Museum and gift shop, is the Longfellow House. The Museum has changing attractions (the one I saw dealt with marriage dress for the past 100 - 150 years, many artifacts with stories tied to people in Maine. Dresses, shoes, hats, uniforms, accessories were displayed to full advantage. Charming gift... More

If you're doing genealogical research (as we were) the Brown Library at the Maine Historical Society is a great resource. Over three days we spent about twelve hours there and came away with some excellent information. The researchers there were extermely knowledgable and helpful. We bought a family membership to the MHS which paid off for our multi-day visit. Just... More
