This was my third visit to New Salem, but it had been 40 years since the last. In one way, not much had changed. But, this time there were several interpreters who made all the visit all the better. We learned much about Lincoln in his twenty's along with information about the town and its residents and what there lives... More

This is a really nice low key place to visit & wander around & immerse yourself in the time when Lincoln was around. They have nice special events. Docents are in authentic period costumes demonstrating how things were done during that time. More

When we visited they had several volunteers at the sites in the park that were giving demos and offering great info. Dressed in period costumes. Site is well kept up and offers a historical view of Illinois during Lincoln's time. More

We went to New Salem in late April during our spring break. We enjoyed exploring the park with our kids. I would recommend finding out about when there are special events at the park--in the interpretive center there were photos of volunteers doing things like spinning yarn and blacksmith work. This would have added a little more to the experience.... More

After not visiting this place for many years, I recently went with my wife, brother (who lives nearby), and sister-in-law, and renewed an acquaintance with a place that brings back memories of all that Lincoln lore I learned as a child growing up in rural Illinois. The log buildings recreate the Lincoln era in New Salem quite well (though only... More

The location is an easy drive from Springfield, IL. If you like colonial Williamsburg, you may enjoy this also. There are living displays, growing gardens, livestock, and lots of walking paths. If you are up to it, walk down the hill to the Sangamon River and see the old gristmill recreation. More

We were told this was not to be missed as there were lots of interrupters. We went on a Friday and there was only 1 woman interrupter. She was wonderful but we were disappointed to not see more. The village is well laid out and a nice walk. We would have liked to have been able to enter more of... More

New Salem has been restored to the period of time when Mr. Lincoln lived there. Lots of cabins and stores, with a lot of activities in the summer to keep the kids interested as well as the grown ups. They've done a great job getting it to it's current state and it's worth a trip to visit. More

Wow, how things have changed since I was a kid. No people working here except for 2. The cabins have fallen into absolute ruin. Not worth going to. More
