Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. This National Historic Landmark serves as the centerpiece for the Flagler College. The grand hotel launched the careers of young architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings who are noted most for the New York Public Library and the House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights, making the Ponce one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. Louis Comfort Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass and mosaics. Murals were completed by George Willoughby Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti. The hotel was gifted to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings. « less

Flagler College is a great spot to take pictures. The architecture is like none other and you can go inside the lobby to view a free video. They also offer tours for $10 per person.

I love visiting this beautiful college formally known as Hotel Ponce de Leon. The students give all the tours and are great at it-kuddos to all of them! The detail in the art and design that was done so many years ago is breathtaking! Take a moment to visit I know you will love it too.

A definite MUST see! We hope to have our youngest son take advantage of what this college has to offer. Bring the family for a wonderful tour. It's full of Flagler history!

Take the tour of Flagler College if you are a history buff. Once a magnificent hotel from the gilded age,the tour gives you an hour of history and insite into the man who built it and marvelous architectural treasure it is. Dana, our guide, was a delight!

such a wonderful history to this bldg!! Tours given by students.....lots to see and admire. Some work being done out front of bldg, courtyard, cafeteria windows, but still a sight to see. Love the Tiffany glass, artwork, carvings, etc.

We decided to take the tour on the spur of the moment, because we were very impressed with the architecture and tile mosaic floors. A tour was about to leave, so we quickly paid and joined in. John, a second year history student at Flagler College, was our tour guide. He did an excellent job sharing his knowledge of the... More

I travel to St Augustine a lot and have walked around Flagler College many times. The best thing to do is the guided tour of the college which provides the history of the building and a chance to see the details up close. Very fascinating stories behind why Henry Flagler made some of the design choices he made, as well... More

You can't miss the beauty of Flagler College (the former Ponce de Leon Hotel) from the street, but it's a treat to tour inside. The video preceding the tour not only gives you the history of the building but also of St. Augustine itself. The foyer, dining hall, courtyard, and former ladies' parlor are all a part of the tour,... More

I was only in St. Augustine for a day but made the best of my time by taking a walk around town. Flagler College was one of my favorite sites along the way. The main building is gorgeous. Be sure to see the fountain surrounded by frog statues in the courtyard and walk into the main entrance and look up... More
