This ghost town is so cool! Easy access and lots of history.
These are the most spectacular 4x4 trails in the Rockies. While the address is Ouray, suggest that you enter this area from Silverton. Go through the town and stay to the right hand road all the way to the trail head parking lot. Then only 4WD vehicles past that point and up a couple of miles to the Ghost Mine...

This is an old mining village that has had some stabilization. The road up follows the old railroad bed and is in pretty good shape. Mostly 4 wheelers at the town site, but I did see a couple of higher clearance passenger vehicles. The road up seemed good to me, but I'd just come over one of the 4 wheel...

Animas Forks is a high country 4wd back mountain road near Ouray. You pass by old mining ghost towns from the late 1800's and go up lots of bumpy narrow mountain passes with great views. We had our own 4wd Jeep but I think there are 4wd tour companies that will take you here.
Went one day while Jeepin and it was well worth it. Lots of old buildings with write ups in a beautiful setting.
Had a great time visiting Animas Forks and picturing what life was like back in the day! You can still go through the buildings if you wish.
We rented a 4x4 4 door jeeP and headed up corkscrew at 8am. Beautiful views of Red Mountain 1&2. The road was quite tame for a stock 4x4 vehicle. The view of Lake Como was my favorite. Animas won't disappoint either. The ghost town has dozens of structures that are in very good shape. The road from Silverton to Animas...

We booked a jeep rental through San Juan Backcountry Jeep Rentals in Silverton, CO. What they don’t tell you on the phone at the time of booking, is that most of the places you want to visit will still be snowed in at the end of May. I thought this was really sneaky and devious on their behalf. Coming from...

It's a long drive from Ouray, longer than we expected! Be sure you take a lunch with you.
We went in late June, and froze our butts off (11,100 feet), so bring a jacket, just in case - even in summer.
Houses and structures are great to explore. Ghost towners will love this place! It's almost as interesting as Bodie....

I was a little worried about taking one of these roads out to a ghost town, but caved for my husband. After talking to several people in Ouray, the guy from the visitor's bureau finally had me convinced that we could do it in our 4 wheel drive 4 door chevy pickup. We passed people in cars and minivans. Roads...
