We rented a Jeep and took the trip out to Animas Forks! Loved the back country jeep adventure getting here!
Amazingly well preserved mining ghost town. Really helps you understand and appreciate the bravery of the people who moved up there and made a life at such altitude and isolation. Make sure to (carefully) walk into the two story "bay window" house, go upstairs and imagine what it must have been like to live there and have such a room...

Other than the amazing amount of 4x4's there, it was a must see! There are many buildings that you can walk through, a set of clean outhouses for the public. We were not able to make the round trip over engineer pass as we were on 4 wheelers and at the end of Engineer pass you must travel through town,...

I've been to quite a few and think Animas Forks ranks in the top 5 ghost towns in Colorado. The drive out of Silverton gets progressively more rough especially after you pass Eureka. I would recommend a 4x4 with decent ground clearence for the drive up to Animas Forks. There are several narrow areas that only one vehicle can bypass...

It's a long, bumpy and dusty drive to get to the ghost town village. You can walk through the many old and abandoned structures. You had to be a very hardy person to want to work and live here!
Well worth a visit BUT be careful beyond Eureka. WE were told we would get there with no problem in our car but it was really difficult and slow driving. The road is very narrow in places and bits of the road have fallen away into the deep distant valley below. The road is also littered with quite large rocks...

We posed for pictures here while traveling up to Oh! Point on Engineer Pass in 2010. We have been back a few times since. Very unique look at an old mining town
Old free standing mines and miners homes that are preserved and fun to explore. Remote town where miners and their families roughed it through snow and rain.
I love ghost towns and this one is very cool! Buildings are mostly safe and can be entered. Easy route up from Silverton, hard way from Ouray. Either was leads you to a cool ghost!
I understand now why this is the most visited ghost town. It is very easily accessible from the town of Silverton by very well maintained gravel road. Since we ride ATV's, we have seen a lot of old mining areas that are much less disturbed.
