Wide beach clean sand, they have recently opened a shop for snacks and beach gear and have added more restrooms. The park rangers do a great job keeping the people from getting to close to the ponies. People tend to forget that these are wild animals and try and feed them. This is our favorite place and have had annual... More

Clean, excellent swimming, convenient restrooms, showers, and changing rooms, beautiful, and appropriately protective of both wildlife and human life!

Less people per square foot of sand than any other beach within hundreds of miles. Wild ponies begging for Doritos - or anything for that matter! Getting in can take a while if it's crowded and parking can be a real challenge: best to get there early morning or late afternoon or weekdays. But, as a local, I can tell... More

It does not get better than this. Wild ponies and a beach. Assateague is the best untouched beach on the east coast. It is a great place to swim and relax as well as numerous other activities. I highly recommend at least one trip to this little barrier island. It is well worth it.

Soft sand, salt water - what else do you need? This is one of the last and fast disappearing great beaches of the US.

just came back from a trip to this beach... went because of the raving reviews on TA, especially N7 among 25... gray sand, cold murky water... yes, it's large and wild, but can't see how it can number anything among the beautiful florida beaches: white sand and warm emerald water. sorry, not going back, or recommend to anyone. just mediocre...

This is where i go to the beach regularly. its nice and clean, there are guarded and unguarded beaches at the national seashore, there are places to surf and fish and bring your dogs too!

This was our 5th trip to Assateague Island. If you're into nature, photography and simply breathing in some fresh air this is the place to go. For the real experience of the island I highly recommend bringing or renting bicycles. Much of the island is off limits to car traffic. There are many roads and trails that bring you close... More

Assateague Island offers a serene and peaceful experience any time of the year! Be sure to reserve many hours to explore the island. The wild ponies are usually visible and don't seem to be bothered by the tourists.

This 60 mile island, in Virginia and Maryland, is very quiet and peaceful this time of the year. Of course, it is always beautiful. No vendors, restaurants, or tee shirt shops. Just the awesome sand and surf here.
