Sometimes historical tours are a bit boring, but the volunteer guide at Chimney Rock made this tour a fabulous experience. Made us want to learn more. The weather during our tour was perfect allowing for incredible photography from the top of the peak... yes you walk up to the top but it was pretty much stress free walk as we... More

Our travel book made this place seem like an afterthought. What a mistake! Near/on Ghost Ranch, Georgia O'Keefe's place of inspiration, this incredible hike is somewhat challenging but offers very rewarding stunning views at the top. We didnt' realize when we set off that we'd get to go all the way up to the "Chimney Rock." On a sunny clear... More

Our newest National Monument (thanks, Barack) is worth a visit. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and spend the time to go over everything. There are not a lot of ruins toured, but the guides are thorough and take smaller groups.

My husband and I visited Chimney Rock the first week of September 2012. We took the first guided tour of the day that started at 9:30. We paid $10 at the visitor center. When the tour was ready to start, we all got in our vehicles and drove over two miles to the upper parking lot. We walked the Great... More

An easy to miss spot just West of Pagosa Springs on CR 160. This gem of an ancient Puebloan site looks to be finally reaching the status it deserves as a National Park. The area contains a 35 room Great House,a "guardhouse"(one theory) atop a narrow causeway and dozens of pit-houses.Our guide Scott was very knowledgeable of the history of the... After visiting Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, we were able to visit Chimney Rock. The tour guides were incredibly knowledgeable, and clearly love the ancient Pueblo people's culture and this space. It is breathtaking. It is a two hour tour, which may seem long, but it flew by. My 11 year old didn't even complain. The structure they were able... More

Right off Highway 160 between Pagosa Springs and Durango is the archeological area for Chimney Rock. From the level of the valley below it looks only like some interesting rock formations. What you discover if you take the guided walking tour is that 1,000 years ago Chimney Rock and its Companion Rock were the center of a thriving settlement of... More

Just attended the same full moonrise celebration at Chimney Rock as described by maw1122. Chimney Rock is about to become a National Monument. The Chacoan culture had a well developed understanding of the cycles of the sun and moon, Just so wonderful to see how developed they were in the 1100AD period. Very respectful crowd of around 100 folks attended.... More

Went to Chimney Rock for full moon rising in August. Of course, it is beautiful and we really appreciated the astronomer talk and flute music. Quite fascinating. We were fortunate that there were few clouds. Most other days that week had lots of thunderstorms in afternoon, but not this day. Had made reservations 6 weeks in advance and paid extra... More

Our guide for the tour of the site, Joan, was superb. She had extensive knowledge of the ancient pueblo cultures in the Four Corners and especially about this specific site. Well worth two hours of your time to visit.
