I don't know why the Trip Advisor app gives an address of 835 Chester for Old Oakland. The area designated Old Oakland (complete with banners on light poles) is more than a mile away, between Clay and Broadway and roughly 8th and 10th. A native of Oakland, I was delighted to see the reinvention of one of our most beautiful architectural locations. A perfect mixture of new and old, this part of Oakland features some magnificent dining (Tamarindo, Cosecha & Siam Bay among others) and is a must see for visitors.
Visit the Belgium beer bar, around old town. The Indian food is out of this world. Would eat there everyday if we could.
Love the downtown it's got such great old buildings with cool architecture. Lots of little shops and deli's -Go exploring we found one we loved!!
Plenty of restaurants and bars -- and food shopping (Housewives Market/Chinatown).
awsome pubs, great jewelry stores, concecha and tamarindo the farmers market... just go.... plenty of parking.. and the architecture is beautiful
This is a small pocket of Oakland adjacent to downtown, Chinatown and the Jack London Square area. The street has been gentrified and there are some interesting shops in this section. Please note; this is a relatively small number of blocks; not an extensive area.
I live in Old Oakland and love it. There are lots of great restaurants and some night life too, at least on some nights. For variety, Chinatown is right next door and sort of melds with Old Oakland. The neighborhood also seems safe. I have never had a problem, although there are often panhandlers who are always friendly.
Very pro Oakland person here and it is great to see Old Oakland thriving. It is every changing, but there are great places to eat and shops to go in. The musicans that frequent the area always bring out the best in Oakland.
