Shattuck Avenue encompasses many different areas. One is alongside Berkeley Bowl and stretches to Kirala Restaurant. To the north are auto dealers and abandoned buildings and lots. Further north extending from Durant to University Avenue is the Berkeley Arts District with many fine restaurants. And farther north is the Gourmet Ghetto, with restaurants with many ethnicities and culinary delights.

We walked to Shattuck from the Berkeley CIty Club, and found an Italian restaurant called Giovanni's, which, it turns out, has been around for decades. We saw the owner, who looked to be in his 80's, still puttering around the facility. We had a very nice dinner, my fish was perfectly cooked, the sides were generous, salad fresh, great wine.... We'll assume they are naming the physical location. Shattuck is not Telegraph Avenue by any stretch of the imagination or if it is it is minus the fun. Parts of Berkeley are cute but most of it is fairly rundown and not altogether a safe place to be.

No shops were unique and inviting. Restaurants looked interesting and menus were long. I wouldn't go out of the way to visit this strip. It really is a college town and not much more.

Heavily trafficked, dotted with closed storefronts, and lacking any appealing small shops or anchor stores, Shattuck is a big disappointment as a main drag. No trees. Dirt. Panhandlers. It feels desolate in many stretches. There are some gems here and there, but on the whole it is not a place to go unless you have to. Definitely not a strolling... More

Diverse restaurant choices and shops. The only thing I don't enjoy is the parking. Parking patrol are heartless.

Shattuck Avenue hasn't change much from the earlier 70's when i use to hang out in Berkeley as a young adult. Still has that 60's style atmoshpere with paper filers still blowing around from the east bay winds.

the best street to hang out and shop and eat. You will love it. They have all sorts of shops that are great like frozen yogurt shops, games of berkeley, phone shops, movie theaters, and a lot of other great shops.
