Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts is a nice place in Dharamsala where one can learn more about the Art and culture of Tibet and their people. It was founded in 1959 by Tenzin Gyatso. They showcase various performing art forms of Tibet here including their traditional folk dance.

It was founded by Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama on reaching India in exile from Tibet in August 1959. It was then called Tibetan Music, Dance and Drama Society, which was one of the first institutes set up by the Dalai Lama, and was established to preserve Tibetan artistic heritage, especially opera, dance, and music.
One of the major highlights of the institute is the annual Shoton Opera Festival, which is a 9-day long celebration of Traditional Tibetan Opera or Lhamo. One Lhamo performance lasts up to 6 hours.

you are only going to like it if you yourself are an artist. otherwise you will easily get bored. Maybe their events would be good but we went there while the rehearsals were going on and i didn't find it that interesting.

A highly under rated attraction. TIPA has regular performances and events which are largely open to the public, however, advertised very little. Few of the evnts are ticketed. when I was there went for dharamsala film festival (which was ticketed) and a practise session of the performace that was to take place for the Dalai Lama's 80 th birthday. If you are interested in Tibetan culture it is must visit place.

It was a treat to watch various dances and music from the various provinces of Tibet so beautifully preserved in Exile.

Tibetan Dances are very pure and soul stirring...

The dances look very simple but are graceful, dynamic very lively and need a lot of dedication to master their intricacies...
