Situated on the Northern Caribbean side of Costa Rica, in the province of Limon, it is approximately 90 miles northeast of the capital city of San José. Accessible only by air or water, Tortuguero is the most important nesting site in the entire western half of the Caribbean for the green turtle. It is known as “Tico Amazon” (Costa Rican Amazon) due to the fact that in Tortuguero there are no roads; the principle means of transportation being the dozens of fresh water canals throughout the park. « less

The early morning boat ride is pretty cool...man those captains can navagate! The setting is a small community with an 8ft wide downtown pathway - beautiful! Do a tour or so and then just hang and relax for a few days with some rum and a coconut by the river. Highly suggest Casa Marbella on the river - great rooms... More

Tortuguero is very remote but worth the effort to get there. I took a morning canal tour in a kayak, which started in a heavy downpour way earlier than I normally get up ... But it was one of the highlights of my trip. I still can't believe some of the birds and animals we se saw and the photo's... More

Tortuguero National Park was our first stop on a 3 week trip around Costa Rica. It's a unique place, accessible only by plane or 1.5hr boat ride. We saw lots of wildlife including monkeys, crocodiles, caimans & iguanas. Tortuguero is very wet and very humid. Each morning it rained heavily for an hour or so, and on and off then... More

Enjoyable touring and experience, and if you have not travelled extensively in jungle area's that are hot and humid, you will get the experience.

The Tortuguero national park has a lot to offer, even if one does not visit when the turtles come to lay eggs. A visitor MUST take a good boat ride along the canals in the reserve, allowing for enough time to sport different birds and other creatures (even monkeys, caymans etc.). We actually had two boat rides- one in the... More

Maybe it was the time of year but we saw more wildlife at our resort than we did on both of our water excursions.
