I went to the Sunday morning service. The city was still quite peaceful and the church and the service was like going back in time, I just loved it. The congregation was very small only about 8 or 9 but I felt welcome and comfortable even though I went alone. The service was held with all the side doors open... More

One of the oldest church of Calcutta, this sprawling church has a soothing effect. Entering the high ceilinged interior one finds oneself belittled in front of the altar.

This is just a church!! In need of a serious clean inside. We visited on the eve of Good Friday and I really thought there would be more effort made considering this is the most holy day in the Christian calendar. Instead down the back of the church was a lawn mower, wheel barrow and gardening implements. Inside. It's worth... More

Good to view the black hole memorial which was on my Must See list. Usual piles of rubbish and building rubble dot the grounds. Lady Canning's tomb was covered with bird droppings. A quiet place to escape the busy streets, just need to close your eyes to the general disorder.

I particularly enjoyed the organ recital that was on when I visited, it gave an extra ambience to an already atmospheric place. The structure itself does resemble St Martins as a number of people have mentioned. One peculiar aspect I found was what looked like a ramp for, probably horse carriages or later, cars, at the rear of the building.... More

St. John’s Church in Kolkata has a lot of resemblance with the St. Martin Church in Trafalgar Square in London despite variations in the architectural styles. The church is not very unique except the portico that has a distinct architecture. Some of the must visit things are Johann Zoffany’s Last Supper, Job Charnock’s Mausoleum that is located in the far... More

St. John's Anglican Church looks like St. Martins in the Fields in London. It is a very peaceful place with a quiet graveyard in which you can find the memorial to those who died in the Black Hole of Kolkata and the tomb of Lord Brabourne amongst others. The interior is wonderful with some great stained glass windows and classic... More

The church on first glance will remind you of St. Martin in the Fields at Trafalgar Square, London (even though they are different in style). However, it the distinct architecture of the portico which adds the charm. Things to look for : Johann Zoffany's Last Supper, Job Charnock's Mausoleum (in the far NW corner of the compund in an apparently... More

Another must visit, a building that played a key part in both Calcutta's and wider India's future. Head there with a a guide or a (very) good book to make it all come to life.
