A famous part of Kolkata since history, one must see Chowringhee. Kolkata is a place and a city where there is place for the middle class and poor also. Food is available for all class of people. Chowringhee is an example of this. There are many lanes ....... It is Kolkata

Real Kolkata....here...shop,stroll,eat and experience the colours and flavours of the city...you get amazing stuffs right on the pavement bazaars which is highly unlikely to be found anywhere...brace for parking issues if you go by your own vehicle...best way is to park your car around Park street and take a walk towards Espalanade Metro Station and explore.

Busy, busy, busy. Loaded with stalls selling everything you can imagine and loads and loads of the same things in every stall. You want belts, jeans, "inner" wear, outer wear, shawls, watches, electricals etcetc - you name it, you can get it. Bargain hard. Do be aware of pickpockets and forget about personal space, you'll have none.

Great place to experience the chaos of Kolkata - good place to shop on the street , see some old buildings ( the grand hotel etc) - gives you a good feel of the city

There are a plethora of makeshift stalls encroaching on both sides of the pavement all the way from Kyd Street to the Oberoi Grand Hotel. It makes it much more difficult to walk down Chowringhee and one is occasionally pestered by the stallholders.

Off of this thriving thoroughfare is Park St., the street I've forgotten on which the old Saki Bar (sp?) was located...and there are even some hi-rises on it! The many marketplaces along the path are loaded with hustlers trying to get you into "their" shops....and you can even get to New Market, Hogg Market...It's like the Center of the Universe!... More

You will love or hate it. But either way, its the lifeline of Kolkata. The heart of the business district. The interstate and long distance bus terminus. You name it, you will find it.

What we liked most about Chowrangee is that it has a host of offerings for the visitors and these offerings are located at very short distance from each other. There are Victoria Terminus, Eden Garden, the stadium, Maidan, Shaheed Minar, Nandan, and Indian Museum, all near to each other. Among other attractions are the Grand Hotel, a host of theaters... It is a pleasure to walk down the Chowringhee, Particularly the stretch from Grand Hotel to Birla Planetariam. On the other side of the road, the Maidan offers a green look, and pleasant evening breeze.

unity in diversity, or diversity in one place !! both confirms at this junction the centrepoint of kolkata, where you can see every caste and creed, all type of vendors, hawkers to big malls, and the waterballs dish ( fuchka) yummy
