Originally the Himalayan railways was connecting the Newjalpaguri( from the plains) to the Darjeeling hill station Via Kurseong by a narrow gauge Toy train. Presently the service from New Jalpaguri to Kurseong has been stopped and the service is between Kurseong and Darjeeling only.( as on may 2013). Unlike the Nilagiri mountain railways in Ooty, Tamilnadu, which runs through difficult... More

the toy train is no big deal as it travels on the same road as your road transport and for this, all the hassel of getting ticket and seats.I would rather travel by the niligiri mountain rail (NMR)as it chugs through valleys, forests, tunnels, british bridges, streams and is close to my heart

I traveled to Darjeeling with my family and booked afternoon joy ride. DHR is UNESCO world heritge site. Joy ride starts from Darjeeling station and makes a round trip to Ghoom and back. On the way it halts at Batasia Loop. One can see the train museum at Ghoom for free during its 30 min halt at the station. This... More

I must confess that I was disillusioned after a real experience on this "Heritage" train. I booked a ticket for four, well in advance, for a joy ride on 25.4.2013.Children were beaming with enthusiasm as they had images of a steam engine in mind, chugging through Darjeeling and its outskirts.Bookings were made well in advance, anticipating rush due to tourist season.... We took the Joy Ride paying around Rs 350/seat. Its a 2 hr ride starting from Darj Railway station, stopping for 10 min in Baptesy Loop and then going to Ghoom station. There it stops for 20 minutes where you can visit the small Museum and then the train comes back to Darj Station. The coaches are very old. Its... More

This is in the UNESCO heritage list. The engine is about 160 years old and coughts coal :-) It takes you back to the old age through the main road of Darjeeling. This is a joyride costing about Rs. 330 for round-trip from Darjeeling to Ghoom. Even one-way can be done and it is still good enough. If you are... More

A nice thing to do while you are here, considering that it may be on the way out (looking at the manner in which the toy trains are being maintained - which is a pity). We enjoyed with our kids the whole steam engine ritual..the toy engine chugging out of the station, shuffling those small coaches around to create a... More

This train is loud! Took it from Darjeeling - Kurseong (3 hours), was a nice ride with superb views. However be prepared for very liberal use of the horn, which ain't quiet. Overall very happy with the experience.
