In fact, there are so many statues, photographs, illustrations, masks, dolls, clothes, documents, paintings, furniture, pieces of plantation equipment, installations and mementos, it's almost impossible to take in the whole place in one go. The printed information is almost exclusively in Portuguese, but the museum provides English-speaking guides, and the back stories behind every single object are at once harrowing and hopeful. Hands down, one of the best museums in Latin America. « less

One of my favourite museums in Sao Paulo. It's very informing and very nicely done inside. However, there is no information in English. I speak some Portuguese and was there with a Brazilian friend, so it was not a problem for me, but those who don't speak the language might struggle to understand a lot of the valuable displays. I... You'll get to know a lot from Brazil visiting this museum. The Africans that have been bought to Brazil as slaves had rich cultural roots, and they came from different regions in Affrica. They had different skills and professions som religious leaders, other shamans. And this museum shows the affrican origins of Brazilian culture as well as the result of... More

You get to visit the park and see some Niemeyer architecture while visiting a large collection of art that not only outlines the Afro-Brasilian history and culture but highlights the production of some of the artists that they have produced.

As Brazilian, I naturally love my country. But this museum is just spectacular, It does not take long to visit, even though one can spend a whole day inside... colorful information about the mix of races, the strong religious aspects and the culture. My foreign friends always enjoy the visit!

As a museum professional, I visit hundreds of museums worldwide each year and have rarely been struck by a greater originality, depth, and sensitivity of exhibitions in a subject museum as found at the Museu Afro-Brazil in Sao Paulo. The director, and original owner of many of th works is a forceful personality whose interests and judgement shine through the... More

A visit to this museum provides a first time visitor with a history of the nation. If nothing else, this makes it a worthwhile few hours. The contribution of the Afro peoples is not to be underestimated and thoroughly enjoyed the contemporary art on show.

This museum is a maze of many great displays depicting the roots of Brazilian culture influenced by Africa and it shows information about slavery, slaves and their culture and habits, suffering and work. It also shows modern art of Afro-Brazilians. Worth a visit.

One of the best keep-secret tourist attractions of São Paulo, the Afro Brasil Museum is trully a journey into the black origins of Brazil. It is beautifully decorated with many artefacts depicting the history of slavery, from the beginning to its end, as well as the modern day role of Afro-brazilians in the contry's multicultural society.
