The museum is a real gem buried deep within a city that once was the largest railroad center in the world. Here you will learn about the men and women who helped to build and maintain the Pennsylvania Railroad. A community that grew up and declined around the railroad. Born and raised in Altoona, I often travel back to visit... More

If you have ANY interest in railroading or Altoona history, this is the place to see, along with Horseshoe Curve. You can easily spend several hours here. If you plan to do it in a couple of hours, you will want to return another day!

Our time was limited the day we visited but would love to return. There is so much to see, read, and absorb about history, it would be worth spending a whole day there. Railroad engine sound effects made the displays seem real. Recorded messages by railroad workers were very interesting to listen to. This place is a must see when... More

I should not have listened to the reviews that claimed this was an interactive museum and great for kids. I have 3 boys (4, 6, and 11) and I was sorely disappointed. First, you have to get he combo pass even though Horseshoe Curve was closed for the season, so it cost $50 for us to get in. The only... More

The museum is very informative and well layed out. They have a playroom for kids to play with trains.

If you are a train/history buff, you need to put this on your list. A well rounded coverage of the history of Altoona and the steam engine industry. If you are a train buff, you can spend a couple of hours patiently absorbing 3 floors of exhibits and artifacts.

Altoone and the Pennsylvania Railroad were intertwined. This facility has many interactive displays describing that co-existance. There is a gift shop and bathroom facilities on site.

This museum was our destination attraction that brought us to Altoona, Pennsylvania. I was not the least bit disappointed. The displays were rich in information and history telling the story of how the men and women of Altoona literally built the locomotives and cars and maintained them all for the Pennsy Rail Road -- the finest rail road in the... I was a little leery of this museum as there isn't much on their website to describe what it actually is but it is worth the trip. My father and I did the combo $10 ticket with Horseshoe curve and it was worth it. We could have spent quite a lot of time in here if we had listened to... More
