aside from historical significance, the restoration and facilities make this a worthwhile stop. very nicely maintained with great displays (and guides) to further understanding of how the soldiers lived and experienced that time in history.

The fort itself was very interesting and a lot of history behind it. Was amazed how the fort was built and defended throughout the times all the way through WWII. Most of the history that was presented was during the Civil War period and presented very well. An adult or teen will not be disappointed, but for small children might...

I was there early one morning wondering around as they prepared for a re-enactment later in the day. They tested the cannon which was pretty neat and watching the pipers and drummers practice was very cool.
The visitor center and the fort are very well done (and free.) The visitor center has an interesting full sized nature diorama and the fort has several re-created Civil War-era exhibits with audio programs.
Took Grandson & he loved it. Thought they had a great self guided tour. I would have liked to have stay for their guilded tour but just did not have time. Best of all it was free.
The fort is located ocean front at the end of Atlantic Beach. The views are impressive from each and every cannon! History buffs and photographers will be in heaven as they read and capture this slice of NC's past. Wonderful place for the entire family to picnic and spend the afternoon!
Fort Macon is a beautifully restored fort which was build circa 1840. It has a rich history and there is also a great little museum there that has a lot the ocean environment.
Take a tour of the story and history of Fort Macon, where the soldiers lived and fought on the beach front in Atlantic Beach, NC. Hear "live" accounts from interactive recordings. Visit the gift shop, then climb the hill to view the ocean.

You can walk through it and there are very well done displays of troops quarters, mess area, cannon and artillary storage areas, and more. There is audio and written information to help you picture what it was like at Fort Macon when...
