New high rises can't beat the harmony of this office building from 1984. Luckily it still stands out on its own now reached by a walkway from the hundred years older Central Market. Another covered connection links it with the Pasar Seni station.

The Dayabumi Complex is a landmark of Kuala Lumpur. Built in 1984, I’m sure it was very modern for it’s time. The 2 distinctive features of the building is the shape like a star, and the facade which is covered in latticework of repeating star shapes in the tradition of islamic art. The whole building is in white concrete and to be honest, I found it a bit bland and sterile, but that’s just my opinion.
The complex is also a mixed use of shops and offices, but there’s hardly any shops and the cafes were pretty empty. In my humble opinion, if you really want to see the building, go ahead. Admiring it from afar will be enough though. I certainly wouldn’t come here for the shops.

Islamic influence on architecture can mainly be seen in religious buildings, this sleek, pure wonder is a normal office tower. It will be reached more easily soon as the new bridge from Central market will open, another connection is the recently enlarged walkway from Pasar Seni metro station.

It is part of the "River of Life" walkway. A symbol of early skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Nice and unique Islamic architecture! Go have a visit!

We unintentionally emerged from the MRT or LRT inside here, and turned out to be glad that we did. It's an impressive looking building, inside and out. Think it worth a look, if it appeals to you.

The last time I visited Dayabumi, in the mid 90s, I remembered a shopping arcade on the lower floor. When I went this time, I wondered where the shops had gone to and why the quaint elevator only had 2 floor selections (1 and 2). Upon inquiring from a security personnel, I was startled when he informed me that there were no shops, except for branded coffee!
Like Komtar in Penang, Dayabumi has become more of a tall, costly and distinctive landmark than anything else today. Unlike Dayabumi however, Komtar still provides a rather vibrant shopping experience especially on the third floor whilst the top floor has been transformed into an upmarket restaurant with some touristy attractions added on.

The Pos Besar building and the City Point shopping center are part of the Dayabumi complex that is dominated by a majestic sky scraper, a tower with 35 storeys. At the time -beginning of the 1980s- it was a prestigious project and part of the Bumiputra policy of the government. Islamic design, opportunities for the Bumiputra entrepeneurs, a state of the art General Post Office, connections with mass transportation systems being developed, all to be realized within one project.
Now 35 years after the tower was completed, many of the shops in city point are empty, the GPO has become more like a parcel delivery company and it remains unclear if office space in the tower is used efficiently. The center of KL has shifted towards the northeast. The neglect of the old area is underscored by the fact you can not even walk from central market to the post office anymore without having to climb staircases to a jungle of pedestrian tunnels.

From my first visit decades ago the emerging of this bold, white building to my vision made me feel I had really arrived to Kuala Lumpur. Only last year I ventured over the river walkway to take a closer look. The modern box serving as lobby has been built later, fortunately it doesn't diminish the classical beauty of this late 20th century artwork serving as an office complex.
