This is an amazing place. Probably a kilometre of covered market with the most diverse incredible food on display and for sale. Difficult to know what most of it is but great photo opportunity. Had the very best strawberries ever from here!

Nishiki Market is a covered food market in central Kyoto. It has an amazing variety of foods, including fresh and preserved seafood, pickles, dried foods, and teas. It's much more hard core Japanese than you'll find in the basement of a typical department store. You can make an easy lunch of the street food sold in the market. It's a... More

We loved exploring the many markets in Kyoto. Of course half the fun is discovering the new sights and flavors in a new city... Kyoto is a world apart as the city is renown for pickling anything, well almost anything. Here was my first experience with takoyaki (glutinous rice balls with octopus inside)... One of my favorite snacks now... Though... More

This place is great. Use it as a walk from Karasuma to the river. So much to see and the stall holders let you tyry almost everything. Go at lunch and you wont need to buy a meal!!! Very colouful, very busy but polite, just kept going back and back to it

This market was quite crowded. As it was raining, people was cramming in to take shelter. It was made worse as there was an VVIP - Aung San Suu Kyi was in the same market as us! There were so many body guards around her but she managed to smile to all well wishers - Nice surprise. Tried some BBQ... More

Here you will find so many different Japanese items. Some are just interesting to see, not necessarily purchase. Fresh fish, produce, clothes, souveniers, etc. Worth a trip to walk through this market and the ajoining ones.

I wish we had put aside more time for this. It is a delightful place, crammed full of shops selling all kinds of food, fresh, preserved, prepared. My husband, the oyster lover, was in 7th heaven popping giant size oysters chucked just for him. There are also a couple of interesting porcelain shops & in the crosslanes are shops selling... More

Went early, started at the Nishiki Shrine as the shops began to set up. What a great place to get a sense of local goods. Price is same here as anywhere else. Bought a great chef knife from the Aritsugo shop. Picked up flowers, a bottle of sake, tea, and unique chopstick holders, had lunch. Give yourself time and feast... More

Took bus 12 from Nijo Castle. Got off at at Shijo-dori/Takakura-dori in front of Daimaru dept store. Walked through the store as Nishiki is directly behind it and to the right. Was rainy day so looking for inside activities. If you like food markets, this is a big one with lots of variety: millions of colorful pickles, seafood/fish, teas, seasoning,... More
