We visited Tofuku ji late in the day and how we've regretted that decision. If there is a japanese Buddhist temple that exemplifies "Zen-ness" and natural beauty - this temple could easily be number 1. On approaching the temple, you will catch a glimpse of the Tsutenkyoi "sky bridge" which is a thing of beauty in itself. Accessing the bridge... More

We went there today for the monthly flea market which is on the 21st of every month. If you are in kyoto then , do all your shopping there. There are wonderful non tacky things to buy for not much money . The Japanese have a wonderful sense of style and design and its eveywhere evident in the clothes, ceramics,... More

Tofukuji Temple is famous because it is a popular en temple and for its spectacular autumn colors. The most popular view is of the Tsutenkyo Bridge, which spans a valley of lush maple trees. The view from the bridge is equally spectacular, and the 100 meter long, covered walkway becomes extremely crowded when the colors reach their peak, usually around... More

I had never been to Tofukuji, one of Kyoto's most famous Zen temples, but recognized one of its most storied parts--the covered bridge that leads to the west entrance--the minute I set foot on it. It's usually pictured in fall, when the view of the abbot's residence is shrouded in red maples, but the vista was almost as pretty in... More

A wonderful Zen Buddhism temple and considered one of the five great Zen temples of Kyoto. We mapped out temples and shrines in Eastern Kyoto and walked to each of them from the south to the north. A wonderful day.

Gardens in this temple is top class. Realised that I have not ventured too much into their gardens after viewing the photos posted here. Will definitely do that in my next trip there. The exhibition of the temples' treasures of statues is simply fantastic! Thousand of years old and yet sophisticated in design and depiction of deities and Asuras. Great... More

If you are in Kyoto for autumn, make sure this place is in your itinerary. Having visited this place during autumn, now I know why the locals come in loads to witness the autumn here. It is so beautiful, just can't find words to explain the scenes before my eyes. It's like you're looking at a postcard....what you see in... More

We keep going back here for autumn leaf pictures. The temple complex is large, so many different areas to explore.

Big building, There is a garden with a lot of trees. During autumn color it must be amazing, but I visited in December. But there are also some really nice stone garden and a field of moss. If you cannot make it to Ryoanji (the famous stone zen garden), this is a good replacement. Ryoanji is in the northern corner... More

Tofukuji is just a short hop from Kyoto station, and has a lovely setting with bridges over a stream, a chequer-board zen garden as well as one of the biggest gates to zen temples.
