Worth seeing, not just another shine... but I wouldn't bother paying extra to actually climb the BILLIONS of steps to the mausoleum itself, the sleeping cat isn't worth the money. Especially as I was short changed by the girl.

I picked up Nikko as one daily trip from Tokyo mainly for this together with these the other two famous temples nearby.

The toshogu was probably the grandest shrine I've seen in Japan. The approach road was wide and beautiful, lined with trees. The pagodas and individual temples were well were colourful and make for very interesting pics.
We traveled from Tokyo to Nikko for a one day excursion, and it was really the highlight of our recent trip to Japan.
A couple of observations if this is your first visit. Plan on a very full day. The train ride from Asakusa is approximately two hours each way. Be sure to purchase the world heritage pass at the...

The buildings themselves and grounds are beautiful, but...

It is absolutely beautiful. Buy the world heritage pass as it is a big savings! You can get the pass at the JR Nikko station
