Worth seeing, not just another shine... but I wouldn't bother paying extra to actually climb the BILLIONS of steps to the mausoleum itself, the sleeping cat isn't worth the money. Especially as I was short changed by the girl.

I picked up Nikko as one daily trip from Tokyo mainly for this together with these the other two famous temples nearby. This Shrine didn't let me know. Though i didn't study much of its history beforehand, my friend driving me for this tour introduced lots of history and stories about this place and suggest you do some research on... More

The toshogu was probably the grandest shrine I've seen in Japan. The approach road was wide and beautiful, lined with trees. The pagodas and individual temples were well were colourful and make for very interesting pics.

We traveled from Tokyo to Nikko for a one day excursion, and it was really the highlight of our recent trip to Japan. A couple of observations if this is your first visit. Plan on a very full day. The train ride from Asakusa is approximately two hours each way. Be sure to purchase the world heritage pass at the... More

Even in winter, there were a lot of tourists at the shrine, which I suppose is inevitable, but detracted from the visit a little. Unfortunately it was also a freezing cold day when we visited and the requirement of taking your shoes off in the un-heated temples, whilst also inevitable, was unpleasant! The buildings themselves and grounds are beautiful, but... More

Toshu-gu is one of the main shrines in the Nikko World Heritage site - make sure that you buy a combination ticket for the 5 main sites. It's famous for its stables, around one of which there is the life history of a monkey, including a famous carving of the "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil" event.... More

It is absolutely beautiful. Buy the world heritage pass as it is a big savings! You can get the pass at the JR Nikko station

It took us over 2 hours to get to Nikko by train from Tokyo so plan for a long day. My main reason for going to the Toshogu Shrine was to see the Three Wise Monkeys. I was a little surprised at the size, thinking that they would be much bigger but it was still a beautiful carving, although a... More
