It's just the enter of the history center of Colonia. It's in a rock wall and it's gorgeous. Just perfect for a nice shoot.

this big door "Puerta de la Ciudadela" is also a Portuguese grand entrance to the city, this 16th centuary gate with its ertstwile grandeur has withstood the times . It also identifies the importance of the place as it house the habitation with all its city needs.

Nice enough but the real attraction is the overall historic part of the city through this gate. There are small shops all along the entryway but not right on top of the bridge/gate, which is nice because you don't get hit over the head with merchandise.

Easy to find this historic entrance way to the town complete with made up drawbridge. Good for a photo opportunity. To the side of it, you can climb up the city walls for a closer look at some cannons and a higher view of the area

It's fairly well kept and you can get a good idea of how things would have looked in the past. It's easy enough to find but not worth spending too much time hanging around, although you might as well walk slowly as it's easy to see most of the historic town pretty quickly.

Tourist traps are not necessarily bad if they are built around something that is otherwise worth seeing. But Colonia Del Sacramento was apparently declared to be a UNESCO Heritage Site in a cynical effort to attract funds with which to rebuilt the ruins of the old city. Not a bad goal, except that neither the old city nor the museum... More

Cute, 2-3 pictures... and that's it ! See my review for the day tour. The whole visit is worth 2-3 hours top unless you want to explore every shop, every worthless museum and take a picture of every spanish or portugese reconstituted house in the colonial city

Take the buquebus ferry from Buenos Aires and enjoy a wonderful meal, lots of small museums, and the many wonderful art & craft shops in Colonia. Only 25 minutes on the ferry and very relaxing. Make sure to see the video at the tourist office just 5 minutes from the ferry port. You stand and it surrounds you to give... More

If you f.eks. are in Buenos Aires, I very much recomand a boat-trip over Rio de la Plata to Uruguay for visiting the old, small , charming Colonia del Scacramento. The small town standing on UNESCO's list for culture inheritance. It's really a nice, quiet and interesting litle town
