If you're visiting the Taroko Gorge National Park, make Hualien as your base. The TRA express train (faster) from Taipei to Hualien takes about 2 hours. Amigos Hostel, 5 min walk from the Hualien TRA Train station, provides basic accommodation. If you prefer 4 star hotel, take a taxi from the train station to the downtown area. When you come... More

We booked a holiday to Taiwan with short notice and didn't know if we would be able to tour Taroko. We didn't want to take an organised tour as we prefer to self-guide at our own pace. We booked return air tickets just a few hours before flight. We took a taxi from the airport to the train station and... More

We visited in the Park on 23 Mar. Places visited include the Entrance Arch Gate, Tourist Centre, Shakadang Trail, Swallow Grotto, Jinheng Bridge, Jhuilu Cliff, Cimu Bridge, Cimu Pavilion, Baiyang Trail and Eternal Spring Shrine. The whole Park is very clean and well-kept. Free maps are available at the Tourist Centre. Helmet is also provided free. We had lunch in... More

The Gorge looks like marble and surrounds is just beautiful. This is a place you need to visit. The landscape is majestic as are the rivers below. We went in September and it was a bit wet with limited walking / hiking tracks open, and less tourists. I would say 2-3 days is sufficient but if you are a keen... More

Do take a 3 or more day tour as this is really worthwhile to the East coast. It is a great wonder of the world, quite sensational, reasonably priced and great bus drivers.

We spent two days in Taroko and enjoyed a few of the easy trails accessible from the road here and there. One of our friends was pregnant so we did not go for the serious hikes that require a licence and a Taiwanese member but I am convinced these must be awsome as well. I particularly like the flat 2.1... More
