Time flies when sitting on the Ghats by the banks of the Ganges when endless activities surround you......... Sadhus, bathers by the dozens, funeral rites, temple activities, etc, etc. Just doing nothing, while others are doing something seems to be the order of the day. And not to forget the many imposing buildings and structures that line the banks which... More

Always a MUST during my visits to India. The evening aarti on the bank of Ma Ganga is a sight to behold and engrosses hundreds of devotees and curious onlookers/ travellers from many countries in a mesmerising performance by a very well disciplined group. The aarti may be witnessed from the bank itself without any cost though arriving early would... More

Banaras, presently known as Varanasi, is situated on the banks of river Ganga and the city has number of ghats (steps leading to the banks of River Ganges)- nearly 84.These ghats cover a 7 kilometer arc line of the Ganges riverfront starting from the River Asi in the south and ending at the River Varuna in the north. Many of... More

I am not really a religious person but do like to understand and visit religious locations. When in Varanasi you cannot be anything other than be involved. The various Ghats along the river serving many differing aspects of life are a wonderous sight to see. We walked along the banks of the River Ganges past a lot of them and... More

Its nice to visit ghats since we are unable to see that very frequently in other countries. Bit sad to see the way they burn the bodies.

Walking along the many Ghats by the Ganges one will see many Ghats built during different times for different purposes. Its quite lovely to experience the history that survives and to overlook what it is today.

Five stars for being a fascinating place; zero stars for the way foreigners are treated. I have been in India for over two months now traveling, and this was a place I was really looking forward to visiting. It is depressing that the holy men and beggars alike only see us foreigners as bags of money who need to be... More
